In August 1939, curators at the Louvre nestled the world's most famous painting into a special red velvet-lined case and spirited her away to the Loire Valley as part of the biggest museum evacuation in history. As the Germans neared Paris in 1940, the French raced to move the masterpieces still further south, then again and again during the war, crisscrossing the southwest of France. Throughout the German occupation, the museum staff fought to keep the priceless treasures out of the hands of Hitler and his henchmen, often risking their lives to protect the country's artistic heritage. Saving Mona Lisa is the sweeping, suspenseful narrative of their struggle.

This volume is a biography of Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919). Renoir was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. This work dedicates itself to the final three decades of Renoir's career in which the painter turned away from Impressionism and toward a more decorative approach informed by his own idiosyncratic interpretation of art history. During this period, Renoir was initially looking at painters such as Rubens, Titian and Raphael, and dedicating himself to cheery subjects such as bathers, domestic idylls and landscapes that were influenced by both classical mythology and by his relocation to the South of France.

The Missing Mind of Hippocrates

In this book, entitled The Missing Mind of Hippocrates, I have addressed spiritual, philosophical, mystical and scientific fact. To demonstrate that we are spending our time in vain in seeking ways to extend our survival in leading research on invisible molecules and showing invalid scenario. The problem is elsewhere. I would not like to address these issues. If generally we can consider ourselves as the sole body, the association of knowledge about the beliefs would help doctors to prevent and cure many diseases without great efforts. Some characters as spiritual, administrative, political, sociocultural and medical must be involved in this matter. Let us forget our religious, philosophical,...

The Folly of War

During all its history humanity it seems, has not learned a thing about the stupidity of war and its horrors. Today, the Middle East is in flames, Israelis are fighting the Palestinians; there is killing each day in Syria, Afghanistan, Iraq, Yemen, and other parts of the world; cities are destroyed by incessant bombing. Victims are fleeing the killing, and emigration to Europe is at an all-time high. But contrary to the young soldiers in the US who learn about the inhumanness of war when they are sent to Vietnam or the Middle East, Alain Corcos lived through War World II as a teenager, then escaped with his brother from Nazi France across the Spanish border and joined the Allied Forces in Ca...

African Psycho

Finalist for the Man Booker International Prize 2015 Gregoire Nakobomayo, a petty criminal, has decided to kill his girlfriend Germaine. He's planned the crime for some time, but still, the act of murder requires a bit of psychological and logistical preparation. Luckily, he has a mentor to call on, the far more accomplished serial killer Angoualima. The fact that Angoualima is dead doesn't prevent Gregoire from holding lengthy conversations with him. Little by little, Gregoire interweaves Angoualima's life and criminal exploits with his own. Continuing with the plan despite a string of botched attempts, Gregoire's final shot at offing Germaine leads to an abrupt unravelling. Lauded in France for its fresh and witty style, African Psycho's inventive use of language surprises and relieves the reader by sending up this disturbing subject.
