His vivid memories of the Bolton Disaster in 1946 graphically illustrate the differences that have occurred for supporters over the last 70 years. As well as being a family man, Gerald had a successful career as an accountant in the Public Sector and was extensively involved in football activities; his experiences as a football referee are eloquently documented. At the age of 58 he was struck down with meningitis and not expected to survive. He and his wife now spend more time at the family home in Spain enjoying the warmer weather.

Three chronicles focus primarily upon the activities of the kings of León-Castile as leaders of the Reconquest of Spain from the forces of Islam, and especially upon Fernando I (1037-65), his son Alfonso VI (1065-1109) and the latter's grandson Alfonso VII (1126-57). The fourth chronicle is a biography of the hero Rodrigo Díaz, better remembered as El Cid, and is the main source of information about his extraordinary career as a mercenary soldier who fought for Christian and Muslim alike.
