A Microhistory of Early Modern Transatlantic Migration

This microhistory of early modern transatlantic migration follows the journey of the Agata, a Dutch frigate hired by Spanish merchants in 1747 to travel between Cádiz and Veracruz. Manned by migrants from across Europe, the Agata was intercepted by British privateers on its return trip, an event that led to the preservation of most of the documents on board, including a collection of personal letters. Through a microscopical lens, this book delves into the lives of some of the migrants linked to the Agata, either as members of the crew —a ship, after all, is a moving workplace— as passengers, or as people sending letters through the ship. Their stories and anecdotes illustrate how early...

Philip IV and the Government of Spain, 1621-1665

This book concentrates on the political history of the reign of Philip IV, and the role of the king within it. Philip is kept near the forefront, and issues and events are often seen - if sometimes critically - from his viewpoint. It is, therefore, a work of revision and rehabilitation, representing an attempt (against all other extant accounts) to establish Philip IV as a positive figure, with an autonomous character and political identity. A secondary, supportive, intention is to demonstrate that after the fall of Olivares, the king ruled and governed without a favourite (valido). This is the central theme in the most detailed treatment of the second half of the reign available in any language. Reference is made throughout to Philip's own words and actions. At the same time, the Olivares period itself is approached from a new perspective, some issues being examined with the use of new material. Although not intended as a conventional biography, the book retains several characteristics of the form, in that it is a 'career-study', part thematic, part chronological. Philip IV is examined also in relation to the political writing of the age, and to his court and capital in Madrid.

Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence

The International Symposium on Distributed Computing and Artificial Intelligence 2013 (DCAI 2013) is a forum in which applications of innovative techniques for solving complex problems are presented. Artificial intelligence is changing our society. Its application in distributed environments, such as the internet, electronic commerce, environment monitoring, mobile communications, wireless devices, distributed computing, to mention only a few, is continuously increasing, becoming an element of high added value with social and economic potential, in industry, quality of life, and research. This conference is a stimulating and productive forum where the scientific community can work towards fu...

7th International Conference on Practical Applications of Computational Biology & Bioinformatics

The growth in the Bioinformatics and Computational Biology fields over the last few years has been remarkable and the trend is to increase its pace. In fact, the need for computational techniques that can efficiently handle the huge amounts of data produced by the new experimental techniques in Biology is still increasing driven by new advances in Next Generation Sequencing, several types of the so called omics data and image acquisition, just to name a few. The analysis of the datasets that produces and its integration call for new algorithms and approaches from fields such as Databases, Statistics, Data Mining, Machine Learning, Optimization, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence. Amongst the serried ranks of capitalists who drove European industrialisation in the nineteenth century, the Rothschilds were amongst the most dynamic and the most successful. Establishing businesses in Germany, Britain, France, Austria, and Italy the family soon became leading financiers, bankrolling a host of private and government businesses ventures. In so doing they played a major role in fuelling economic and industrial development across Europe, providing capital for major projects, particularly in the mining and railway sectors. Nowhere was this more apparent than in Spain, where for more than a century the House of Rothschild was one of the primary motors of Spanish economic develop...

Practical Applications of Computational Biology & Bioinformatics, 14th International Conference (PACBB 2020)

This book highlights the latest research on practical applications of computational biology and bioinformatics, and addresses emerging experimental and sequencing techniques that are posing new challenges for bioinformatics and computational biology. Successfully applying these techniques calls for new algorithms and approaches from fields such as statistics, data mining, machine learning, optimization, computer science, and artificial intelligence. In response to these challenges, we have seen the rise of a new generation of interdisciplinary scientists with a strong background in the biological and computational sciences. These proceedings include 21 papers covering many different subfields of bioinformatics and computational biology. Focusing on interdisciplinary applications that combine e.g. bioinformatics, chemoinformatics, and system biology, they are intended to promote the collaboration of scientists from different research groups and with different backgrounds (computer scientists, mathematicians, biologists) to reach breakthrough solutions and overcome the challenges outlined above.

Biological and biomedical research are increasingly driven by experimental techniques that challenge our ability to analyse, process and extract meaningful knowledge from the underlying data. The impressive capabilities of next generation sequencing technologies, together with novel and ever evolving distinct types of omics data technologies, have put an increasingly complex set of challenges for the growing fields of Bioinformatics and Computational Biology. The analysis of the datasets produced and their integration call for new algorithms and approaches from fields such as Databases, Statistics, Data Mining, Machine Learning, Optimization, Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence.
