Alexander Dettmar - Painting to Remember
On the evening of November 9, 1938 the synagogues in almost all of Germany's towns and cities went up in flames. The artist Alexander Dettmar has made it his task to save this lost cultural heritage from total oblivion by capturing the burnt-down buildings in his paintings. In reality Alexander Dettmar (b. 1953 in Freiburg) is a restless artist, always on the move, whose studio is the public space: streets and squares. In his pictures he captures the architecture of those old buildings which have survived. For his series of destroyed German synagogues, of course, he has had to break with this working method. Aufzeichnungen eines Untermenschen
Als einer von wenigen lettischen Juden hat Alexander Bergmann den Holocaust überlebt. Erst im Ghetto in Riga, anschließend in verschiedenen Konzentrationslagern und zuletzt als Zwangsarbeiter in einem Außenlager des KZ Buchenwald hat er eine Odyssee erlebt, deren Qualen mit menschlichem Maß kaum zu begreifen sind. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg als Rechtsanwalt in Riga tätig, konnte er erst nach dem Ende der sowjetischen Herrschaft 1990 daran denken, seine Erinnerungen der Jahre 1941 bis 1945 aufzuschreiben und öffentlich zu machen. Alexander Bergmann berichtet präzise und mit hohem analytischen Verstand, seine "Aufzeichnungen" gehören in unser kollektives Gedächtnis.

This bibliography offers a new and indispensable tool for both researchers and practitioners in the field of Islamic law. It supplements the bibliographies published by Joseph Schacht (1964) and John Makdisi (1987) and includes some 1,600 Western-language publications which have appeared between 1980 and 1993. It contains a general and a regional section. With regard to the latter, the main focus is on the Middle East (including Afghanistan and North Africa), although publications in South and Southeast Asia have also been included. In order to facilitate its use, an authors' index and a subject index have been added.
