An evocative historical novel that explores the rising influence of Dickens's work in mid–19th century London through the journey of a young woman's struggle against poverty and injustice. In the winter of 1836, a young journalist named Charles Dickens held an infant in his arms. Only eight months of age, Ruby Spriggs was living under the most deplorable conditions that existed in London. Crushing poverty seemed her only future. Through the intervention of kind patrons, the child blossoms into a young woman instilled with a love of learning and books. But the forces that Dickens fought against for most of his life threaten to destroy her. At the heart of The Baker's Tale is Ruby Spriggs; E...

Winks and Daggers

Thomas Hauser's annual collections have been avidly anticipated from the time A Beautiful Sickness was published by the University of Arkansas Press in 2001 until his most recent collection, Boxing Is . . . , was named a 2010 Best Sports Book of the Year by Booklist, which has called Hauser "the current champ in boxing literature." Sportswriter Donald McRae recently wrote, "Thomas Hauser has become boxing's indispensable writer with a stream of books and internet columns that strip away the layers of intrigue to reveal a seamy but addictive world. Whether writing Muhammad Ali's biography, or shredding boxing's power brokers, Hauser instills passion and gravitas into his work." Winks and Dagg...

Abstract: The cell type diversity and complexity of the nervous system is generated by a network of signaling events, transcription factors, and epigenetic regulators. Signaling and transcriptional control have been easily amenable to forward genetic screens in model organisms like zebrafish. In contrast, epigenetic mechanisms have been somewhat elusive in genetic screens, likely caused by broad action in multiple developmental pathways that masks specific phenotypes, but also by genetic redundancies of epigenetic factors. Here, we performed a screen using small molecule inhibitors of epigenetic mechanisms to reveal contributions to specific aspects of neurogenesis in zebrafish. We chose dev...

Thomas Hauser on Sports

Thomas Hauser is best known to sports fans as Muhammad Ali's biographer and for his recording of the contemporary boxing scene. Booklist says that Hauser is "the most respected boxing journalist working today and perhaps the best ever." Robert Lipsyte calls him "the best boxing writer of our time." Thomas Hauser on Sports brings together Hauser's articles on sports other than boxing. The journey begins in the days of Hauser's youth and follows the games we play into the era of steroids and multi-billion-dollar television contracts. It combines personal memories with issue-oriented commentary and an intimate look at some of the most remarkable athletes of modern times.
