Spasticity

Over the past 10-20 years there has been an explosion of work on the disturbance of motor control that is manifested as "spasticity." This work has been based on new insights from animal experiments into the basis of normal motor control and the development of experimental techniques that could be used in patients with neurological disturbances. For this reason, on the initiative of Alfred Thilmann, the editors of this volume organized a workshop on spasticity, held in Essen, Germany, in November, 1992. The intention of the meeting was to bring together leading scientists in an atmosphere that would generate discussion and hopefully consensus and ideas for future work. The attendance was restricted and deliberately selective, with a mix of basic scientists, clinical scientists and practicing clinicians. The product of their presentations and deliberations is this volume. The book is organized in the same sequence as the workshop, so that the discussion sessions could be summarized by the appropriate chairman.

Making up the Mind

Written by one of the world’s leading neuroscientists, Making Up the Mind is the first accessible account of experimental studies showing how the brain creates our mental world. Uses evidence from brain imaging, psychological experiments and studies of patients to explore the relationship between the mind and the brain Demonstrates that our knowledge of both the mental and physical comes to us through models created by our brain Shows how the brain makes communication of ideas from one mind to another possible

The second edition of Neuro-Oncology: The Essentials presents a comprehensive, highly readable introduction to the fundamental science and core clinical concepts for successfully managing common problems in neuro-oncology. Tightly focused chapters provide up-to-date systematic coverage of biology, imaging, surgery, radiation, chemotherapy, and biological concepts. The book addresses specific tumor types in separate chapters, providing detailed discussion of background, incidence, clinical features, management, surgical approaches, recurrence, and outcomes.Highlights: Pearls, pitfalls, controversies, and special considerations in textboxes -- ideal for rapidly reviewing key points More than 250 photographs and illustrations demonstrate important concepts This book is an invaluable reference for neurosurgeons, neurologists, oncologists, residents and fellows in these specialties, as well as for students.

Neuromechanics and Control of Physical Behavior: from Experimental and Computational Formulations to Bio-inspired Technologies

Neuromechanics and Control of Physical Behavior: from Experimental and Computational Formulations to Bio-inspired Technologies

The term "neuromechanics" defines an integrative approach that combines the neuromuscular control and the biomechanical aspects of physical behavior in humans and animals. Crucial to this approach is a detailed description and modeling of the interaction between the nervous system and the controlled biomechanical plant. Only then do we have the broader context within which to understand evolution, movement mechanics, neural control, energetics, disability and rehabilitation. In addition to enabling new basic science directions, understanding the interrelations between movement neural and mechanical function should also be leveraged for the development of personalized wearable technologies to augment or restore the motor capabilities of healthy or impaired individuals. Similarly, this understanding will empower us to revisit current approaches to the design and control of robotic and humanoid systems to produce truly versatile human-like physical behavior and adaptation in real-world environments. This Research Topic is therefore poised at an opportune moment to promote understanding of apparently disparate topics into a coherent focus.
