The England and Holland of the Pilgrims

Divided into six books accompanied by appendixes, indexes, and scholarly appurtenances, this work attests to Henry Dexter's remarkable expertise with respect to the source records of the English and Dutch backgrounds of the Pilgrim Fathers. The six books together constitute an encyclopedic history of Pilgrim affairs in England and Holland, a systematic examination of every facet of Pilgrim life from the shaping of the Protestant conscience to the history of the Separatists--their persecutions in England and their churches in Amsterdam and Leyden--to summaries and particulars of those who set out to America on the Mayflower, the Fortune, the Anne, and the Little James. The entries, typically, give place of origin, occupation, names of wives (with dates of betrothal), references to contemporary Dutch records, and a variety of incidental matter-in all, a successful attempt at enumerating the whole company of Pilgrims in Holland.

The Sinking of the Titanic and Great Sea Disasters

A century after it sank to the bottom of the St. Lawrence River, the ruin of the Empress of Ireland has remained one of the most devastating tragedies in maritime history. Logan Marshall’s vivid and detailed reportage was the first account of the disaster and has endured as a classic chronicle of what happened that fateful night. On May 28, 1914, the grand ocean liner, the Empress of Ireland, left Quebec on the St. Lawrence River, bound for an Atlantic crossing to Liverpool, England. At a few minutes before two o’clock on the morning of Friday, May 29, the Empress sighted the Norwegian collier, Storstad, at the same time as a heavy fog bank was descending. Despite warnings and evasive ma...

To the 1635 souls who were lost with the ill-fated Titanic, and especially to those heroic men, who, instead of trying to save themselves, stood aside that women and children might have their chance; of each of them let it be written, as it was written of a Greater One--"He Died that Others might Live" "I stood in unimaginable trance And agony that cannot be remembered."--COLERIDGE Dr. Van Dyke's Spiritual Consolation to the Survivors of the Titanic The Titanic, greatest of ships, has gone to her ocean grave. What has she left behind her? Think clearly.

Guilty Males and Proud Females is the first complete study on the Bengali gajan festival dedicated to Dharmaraj, a village god in the Rarh region of Bengal. The gajan is the dramatic representation of an hierogamy--the marriage of a god and goddess--and a recreation of the life-cycle of earth. As Fabrizio M. Ferrari explains one of the most fascinating aspects of the gajan is its approach to gender. The central deity of the gajan is a goddess identified with the earth. To please such a goddess, male devotees must acknowledge the pain they inflict towards the female world and become "ritual women." Conversely, as part of the festival, women display their generative power and provoke the jealousy of men by ritually mocking conception and delivery. The outcome of the ritual is that their suffering is acknowledged and transformed into power. Much more than an ethnography of Bengali popular religion, Guilty Males and Proud Females contributes to new studies on gender transformation in the Bengal region and will be of interest to scholars of South Asian religions, folklore, and gender studies.
