The steamship Baltic was on the point of sailing from America to Europe. The usual scenes were visible on the wharf–the rushing on board of belated freight and baggage–the crush of passengers and their friends on deck, or down in the cabins, where partings were being drunk in wine; the crowd of steerage passengers forward, trying to keep out of the way of the sailors, and at the same time to salute or converse with their friends on the dock; the rattle and bustle all around; the blow of steam from the impatient boilers; the sharp, brisk orders of the junior officers; the rush of carriages with passengers, and the shouting of draymen anxious to get their loads aboard–all these sights and sounds were both felt and visible as a bright-looking young man, distinctly American to all appearances, alighted from a cab and walked up the steamer's gang-plank, followed by a porter and the driver with trunks and parcels.

Angela gazed at the picture on Richard's wall, an image of a young woman with her legs akimbo, revealing all her glory in a distinctly provocative pose. There was an equal amount of danger and fascination in the picture. What was she getting into herself into? It was not as though she had played the romance quite straight, not when she had nearly been seduced by Richard's friend Arnold at the party. And wasn't Arnold into Black Power, as well as being reckoned to be highly dangerous by The Times newspaper, no less? The affair she was almost unwittingly setting out on looked decidedly risky... but enticing. She wanted to push herself, to experience all that life had to offer. This was, after ...

Born on the Isle of Mull to an impoverished lair of the clan Maclean, young Allan fought his first battle — for Bonnie Prince Charlie at Culloden — from a sense of deep conviction and family loyalty. He fled into exile when the Stuart cause was lost. In Holland he became a mercenary, and after amnesty was granted for Jacobites, he joined the British army serving in North America during the Seven Years’ War, and again during the American Revolution. He was at Quebec on New Year’s Eve 1775 when the city was attacked by Benedict Arnold, and shortly thereafter become the military governor of Montreal. Between the two wars, when the army was reduced and he was on half-pay, Maclean was pre...

Diversion and Deception

Among the operations known as Plan Bodyguard, the deception devised to cover the Allies’ Normandy landing, was the little known but critical Plan Zeppelin, the largest and most complex of the Bodyguard plans. Zeppelin, in conjunction with the Mediterranean Strategy, succeeded in pinning down sixty German divisions from southern France to the Balkans in time for D-Day. This was the work of “A” Force, Britain’s only military organization tasked with carrying out both strategic and tactical deception in World War II. Whitney T. Bendeck’s Diversion and Deception finds “A” Force at its finest hour, as the war shifted from North Africa to Europe. Focusing on the years 1943 to 1945, B...
