Moderne Wissenschaftsgeschichte ist nicht gleichzusetzen mit einer Geschichte der abstrakten und empirischen Wahrheitsfindung. Genauso wenig reduziert sie sich auf die meist als intellektuell begriffenen Inhalte. Wissenschaft vollzieht sich vielmehr im sozialen Raum und wird damit stets von wissenschaftsfernen Aspekten beeinflusst. Somit müssen auch die Gründungsväter des Deutschen Historischen Instituts Paris als sozial determinierte Akteure gelten, die in diesem Band als Wissenschaftsorganisatoren zu erleben sein werden. Incunabula in Transit
Almost half a million books printed in the fifteenth century survive in collections worldwide. In Incunabula in Transit Lotte Hellinga explores how and where they were first disseminated. Propelled by the novel need to market hundreds of books, early printers formed networks with colleagues, engaged agents and traded Latin books over long distances. They adapted presentation to suit the taste of distinct readerships, local and remote. Publishing in vernacular languages required typographical innovations, as the chapter on William Caxton’s Flanders enterprise demonstrates. Eighteenth-century collectors dislodged books from institutions where they had rested since the sales drives of early printers. Erudite and entertaining, Hellinga’s evidence-based approach, linked to historical context, deepens understanding of the trade in early printed books.
Technique and Design in the History of Printing
Containing 26 selected and thoroughly rewritten essays and articles (all written by Janssen and published previously between 1976 and 2002 in yearbooks and periodicals) all dedicated to the history of printing and book production, this work draws systematically attention to the typogtaphical design of the book. The articles are mainly divided into two fields of attention: the analytical bibliography of the printed book (book production, studies of the technical aspects of type-setting and printing, type founding, printing presses, paper etc.) and the typographical design of books (its functions and its influence on how texts are read).
