O célebre matemático J. L. LAGRANGE publicou, em 1788, a sua Mécanique Analytique, na qual expôs a Mecânica Clássica como um ramo da Análise Matemática. As Equações de Lagrange tratadas neste livro foram apresentadas, pela primeira vez, naquela ocasião. Os problemas de Mecânica Clássica e, em particular, três séculos de pesquisa em Mecânica Celeste estimularam o desenvolvimento de grande parte da matemática que conhecemos atualmente.
