A Line in the Andes
A Line in the Andes -- a one year investigation developed at the Harvard Graduate school of design -- examines the transformative role of the first underground metro line currently being implemented in the city of Quito (Ecuador). Through archival material, original drawings, and text, this publication frames the metro project within the city's historic and current urban form, visualizing the urban potential of this contemporary valley-city. In doing so, the material documented in this book sets the stage for well-informed design deliberations regarding an urban future Quito deserves. The book also includes a collection of essays by Rahul Mehotra, Quito Mayor Augusto Barrera, Edgar Jacome, Pablo Perez Ramos, Martin Cobas, Graciela Silvestri, and Ana Maria Duran Calisto. The writings expand on a series of themes related to Quito and frame the city within a broader geographic and disciplinary context.

The Petropolis of Tomorrow
In recent years, Brazil has discovered vast quantities of petroleum deep within its territorial waters, inciting the construction of a series of cities along its coast and in the ocean. We could term these developments as Petropolises, or cities formed from resource extraction. The Petropolis of Tomorrow is a design and research project, originally undertaken at Rice University that examines the relationship between resource extraction and urban development in order to extract new templates for sustainable urbanism. Organized into three sections: Archipelago Urbanism, Harvesting Urbanism, and Logistical Urbanism, which consist of theoretical, technical, and photo articles as well as design proposals, The Petropolis of Tomorrow elucidates not only a vision for water-based urbanism of the floating frontier city, it also speculates on new methodologies for integrating infrastructure, landscape, urbanism and architecture within the larger spheres of economics, politics, and culture that implicate these disciplines. Beyond Petropolis
Each year, the Graduate Program in Urban Design at the City College of New York travels to a city somewhere in the world that is experiencing a revelatory form of stress. In January of 2006 - joined by students and faculty from the Universidad Catolica in Quito and from the architecture and landscape programs at CCNY - the destination of the group was the small town of Nueva Loja in the Amazon basin of Ecuador. Antípolis
La expresión Cinturón del Sol (Sunbelt) designa la franja de Estados Unidos comprendida entre el paralelo 37 y la frontera con México. En ella se ubican los catorce estados y las decenas de ciudades que protagonizan este libro: Los Ángeles, Phoenix, Dallas, Houston, Atlanta, Miami, etc. Sin embargo, el Cinturón del Sol es algo más que un término geográfico: es un estilo de vida; un cóctel compuesto de conservadurismo político, ultraliberalismo económico, modos de vida suburbanos, alta movilidad, buen clima y ocio.
