Forms from the earth

Summary: Young-Jae Lee (b. 1951 in Korea) has received a number of prizes as head of the internationally famous pottery workshop, the Keramische Werkstatt Margaretenhöhe in Essen. Her work as a potter is rooted in Far Eastern tradition, but also reflects modern Western influences. She developed her characteristic language on the basis of the formal principles of the Bauhaus. Thus her bowls and vessels are noteworthy for their perfection of execution and their memorable, discreetly coloured glazes and painting. Young-Jae Lee's works develop their meditative effect both as individual items and also together, interacting with other members of a group. In the Sinclair-Haus, additionally, the artist incorporates works from the ALTANA art collection on the theme of nature into her large-scale mises-en-scène. This catalogue uses large-format illustrations to show the resulting interactions, some harmonious, some contrastive and full of tension. Exhibition: ALTANA Kulturstiftung, Bad Homberg (18.06 - 15.08.2010).

Blurred landscapes, falling trees and the lofty peaks of the Pyrenees - the extraordinary aesthetics of Ori Gersht's work seduce the viewer. But beneath the beautiful first appearances lie the sites of historical events - in this way the artist makes visible what is no longer plain to see. Ori Gersht (* 1967) views the landscape as the location of past events. On his journeys he follows the traces of the past and translates the process of remembering into powerfully expressive images. The impressive panorama of the Pyrenees, for example, is a site of a desperate flight from the National Socialists. His works of art are metaphors for the unsolvable relationships between past and present, between life and death. They are in the liminal space between (natural) forces and destruction on the one hand, and beauty and grandeur on the other. The images unfold their poetry and horror simultaneously in an extensive pictorial series.

Chiharu Shiota gained international fame for her exhibition at the Japanese Pavilion at the 2015 Venice Biennale. Born in 1972, the artist from Osaka first studied painting in Kyoto. Later she went on to complete her art studies in Berlin as a student of Marina Abramović. With her works, mostly huge installations, she creates poetic interventions that are fragile and yet at the same time have a palpable physical presence. Recurrent elements in her art--such as webs made of knotted wool threads, boats, or red color--refer to the significance of human relationships, and present life as a continuous journey and blood as a symbol of life. Her personal experience and inner feelings are at the heart of her work. The fragility of her body and the awareness of her own finite nature are thus reflected in many of her pieces. This book provides a concise overview of Shiota's impressive work. In addition to her current installations, it showcases early works, drawings, and sculptures.

Ori Gersht. Naturgewalten

  • Categories: Art

Contemporary artists who examine nature and landscape in their work, again and again focus on the book as a form of expression. Landscapes are composed from written pages and book objects are created from natural materials. Written-down myths of becoming nature and becoming human, herbaria -- and books on herbs attempt to grasp the phenomena. Many visual artists take up the book as a medium -- specifically also in connection with the big topic of 'nature'. With this exhibition, the Museum Sinclair-Haus, Bad Homburg in Germany, has finally become a universal library in which very diverse artistic forms of expression find their space.Featuring the work of 23 artists including Su Blackwell, Anish Kapoor, Anselm Kiefer, Alicja Kwade, John Latham, and Katie Paterson.Published on the occasion of the exhibition Buchwelten / Book Worlds at Museum Sinclair-Haus, Bad Homburg, 1 October 2017 - 4 February 2018.English and German text.

A Regulatory Framework for the Art Market?

  • Categories: Law

This book addresses practical issues in connoisseurship and authentication, as well as the legal implications that arise when an artwork’s authenticity is challenged. In addition, the standards and processes of authentication are critically examined and the legal complications which can inhibit the expression of expert opinions are discussed. The notion of authenticity has always commanded the attention of art market participants and the general art-minded public alike. Coinciding with this, forgery is often considered to be the world’s most glamorous crime, packed with detective stories that are usually astonishing and often bizarre. The research includes findings by economists, sociolo...
