Bijna honderd jaar geleden organiseerde de FIFA de eerste editie van het WK voetbal, dat gaandeweg uitgroeide tot een van de grootste sportevenementen ter wereld. En overal waar het voetbal kwam, ging de politiek mee. Al in 1934 gebruikte het fascistische regime van Mussolini het WK voor propaganda, net als de militaire dictatuur van Argentinië in 1978. In 2006 ontstond er juist iets moois: tijdens een burgeroorlog gaf het nationale elftal van Ivoorkust een impuls aan het vredesproces. Het omstreden WK in Qatar laat opnieuw zien dat sport en politiek geen gescheiden werelden zijn. 90 minuten oorlog beschrijft hoe het voetbal in de loop van de geschiedenis steeds weer verstrengeld raakte met politiek en oorlog.
