The External Effects of Public Housing Developments on Informal Housing
Provision of new subsidized housing projects has proven to be an effective alternative to reduce the high level of quantitative housing deficit in developing countries. However less is known about how these housing projects affect the quality of the surrounding habitat, especially when projects are located in areas with high levels of precarious housing. Using highly granular public information from Medellin, Colombia, we estimate the causal effect of new social housing projects (VIS) on housing quality indicators in the neighborhood. To estimate this causal effect, we use the geological quality of the land as an instrumental variable for a measure of exposition to new social housing projects. Our results show that new VIS projects lead to a reduction of informal housing, poverty, and crime in the neighborhood.

La misma oscuridad en todas las hogueras es una introducción al universo intertextual de la narrativa del escritor colombiano Pedro Gómez Valderrama (Bucaramanga, 1923 - Bogotá, 1992), recopilada en la antología Cuentos completos (reeditados por Ediciones Uniandes en el 2016 con el título Más arriba del Reino). Dichos relatos trazan rutas geográficas e históricas precisas. Parten de la Europa medieval, pasan por el descubrimiento de América y arriban a Tolú, capital de la brujería, situada a corta distancia de Cartagena. Este recorrido está marcado por acontecimientos puntuales, no obstante, los ensayos y las narraciones iluminan tanto épocas anteriores como el momento presente de la escritura y de la lectura. De esta forma la literatura se convierte, para Pedro Gómez Valderrama, en una catacresis metafórica que cubre los vacíos de la historia oficial ortodoxa. Esta herramienta le permite al humanista documentar el devenir ideológico de la Europa medieval, su persistencia en los siglos XVI y XVII y sus repercusiones hasta el presente en las colonias americanas.
