Ethnography in Higher Education
Ethnographic research in higher education is gaining momentum. In the last 10 years, we saw a great increase in publications, and more and more researchers endorse ethnography because of its distinctive qualities and its productivity for research in higher education: Ethnography is commended for its unique approach to social practices through continuous and immediate experience in field work, and its unfragmented methodical attention to situations, interactions, and experiences. This unique approach is explored in the present book, which brings together researchers from Europe, America, and Australia, and includes current ethnographic studies on higher education, reflections on teaching ethnography, and innovative approaches in ethnographic methods.

"Indigene" Lebensentwürfe
Das Aufeinandertreffen grundlegend unterschiedlicher Relevanzstrukturen ist ein Phänomen, von dem verstärkt AkteurInnengruppen betroffen sind, deren Selbst-Weltverhältnis nicht primär in der Moderne gründet. Diese Studie untersucht „indigene“ Lebensentwürfe in Mexiko, die sich im Spannungsfeld von Modernisierung und von westlichen Vorstellungen divergierenden Orientierungsfolien bewegen. Unter den Bedingungen konkurrierender Wissensprofile werden die von den AkteurInnen entwickelten Handlungskonzepte subjektorientiert, anhand narrativ-biographischer Interviews, erschlossen und exemplarisch herausgearbeitet. Im Besonderen richtet sich der Blick auf Lern- und Bildungsprozesse, welche in der Begegnung divergenter Relevanzstrukturen entwickelt werden. Von Interesse sind dabei biographische Formate, welche die soziale Einbindung als primären Baustein biographischer Konstruktionsprozesse erkennen lassen und ein Potenzial sichtbar machen, das auf kreative Aktivitäten ‚abseits’ moderner Lebenskonstruktionen verweist.

"This book analyses the challenges of globalisation and uncertainty impacting on working and learning at individual, organisational and societal levels. Each of the contributions addresses two overall questions: How is working and learning affected by uncertainty and globalisation?
