"Europe" Turned Local - The Local Turned European?
This book draws theoretically and methodologically from the sociology of curriculum, educational policy, and comparative education to meta-analyze the findings of nine separate studies exploring constructions of "Europe" in the secondary school curricula of Social Studies from a number of countries: Germany, Greece, France, Poland, Cyprus, Sweden, Ireland, and Northern Ireland, as well as the Autonomous Community of the Basque Country (Spain). The objectives of the book are threefold: first, to explore constructions of "Europe" and "European identity-citizenship" in these countries' curricula; second, to explore whether, and, if so, how these findings indicate a "Europeanization" of national curricula; and third, to discuss the similarities, differences, continuities, discontinuities, and tensions identified when comparing these curricula. Jews in German Literature since 1945
This volume contains some 46 essays on various aspects of contemporary German-Jewish literature. The approaches are diverse, reflecting the international origins of the contributors, who are based in seventeen different countries. Holocaust literature is just one theme in this context; others are memory, identity, Christian-Jewish relations, anti-Zionism, la belle juive, and more. Prose, poetry and drama are all represented, and there is a major debate on the controversial attempt to stage Fassbinder’s Der Müll, die Stadt und der Tod in 1985. The overall approach of the volume is an inclusive one. In his introduction, the editor calls for a reappraisal of the terms of German-Jewish discourse away from the notion of ‘Germans’ and ‘Jews’ and towards the idea that both Jews and non-Jews, all of them Germans, have contributed to the corpus of ‘German-Jewish literature’.

Speaking like a Spanish Cow: Cultural Errors in Translation
What is a cultural error? What causes it? What are the consequences of such an error? This volume enables the reader to identify cultural errors and to understand how they are produced. Sometimes they come about because of the gap between the source culture and the target culture, on other occasions they are the result of the cultural inadequacies of the translator, or perhaps the ambiguity arises because of errors in the reception of the translated text. The meta-translational problem of the cultural error is explored in great detail in this book. The authors address the fundamental theoretical issues that underpin the term. The essays examine a variety of topics ranging from the deliberate political manipulation of cultural sources in Russia to the colonial translations at the heart of Edward FitzGerald’s famous translation The Rubáiyát of Omar Khayyám. If, traditionally, intercultural mediation has been understood as a conflict-solving strategy or as a means to facilitate communication between individuals from different cultural backgrounds, Bridging Culture aims at providing a framework and a set of theoretical reflections towards a larger vision of the field, presenting mediation as a particular form of critical intervention within the different domains of the humanities. The contributions in the present volume take intercultural mediation to be a multifaceted, interdisciplinary phenomenon, impacting upon the fields of linguistics and literature as well as translation and cultural studies, where themes such as interculturality, multilingualism, and cultural transfer are continual and urgent features of contemporary discourse and debate.
