Advances in Nitric Oxide and Cancer is a volume that serves to give the latest research on nitric oxide (NO) and cancer. More specifically, the volume reviews significant advances in the application of NO-mediated drugs. The volume explores nitric oxide and its relationship to cancer spanning from its roles in the pathogenesis, prognosis, gene and protein modifications, regulation of resistance to cytotoxics, and therapeutic applications. With chapters written by leading experts, the volume addresses the burgeoning interest in a rapidly advancing field and provides a valuable resource to scientists who have initiated research as well as clinical investigations in their laboratories on the various roles of NO and cancer.
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ) deficiencies are clinically and genetically heterogeneous diseases that can occur due to defects of ubiquinone biosynthesis (primary deficiencies) or other causes (secondary deficiencies). Radical oxygen species (ROS) production and oxidative stress is a common consequence of dysfunctional mitochondria and CoQ deficiency. Mitochondrial damage induced by ROS can trigger mitochondrial permeability transition (MPT) by opening of non-specific high conductance permeability transition pores in the mitochondrial inner membrane. This, in turn, leads to a simultaneous collapse of mitochondrial membrane potential and the activation of selective elimination of depolarized and dysfunctional mitochondria by mitophagy. In this respect, mitophagy could be considered as a protective mechanism for elimination of potential harmful mitochondria. Mitophagy must be accompanied by mitochondrial biogenesis activation to compensate the mitochondrial loss. However, massive and persistent mitophagy may impair cell bioenergetics, autophagy flux, and mitochondrial biogenesis, and eventually may cause cell death.
Understanding the importance and necessity of the role of autophagy in health and disease is vital for the studies of cancer, aging, neurodegeneration, immunology, and infectious diseases. Comprehensive and forward thinking, these books offer a valuable guide to both cellular processes while inciting researchers to explore their potentially important connections. Considering that autophagy is associated with numerous biological processes, including cellular development and differentiation, cancer (both antitumor and protumor functions), immunity, infectious diseases, inflammation, maintenance of homeostasis, response to cellular stress, and degenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinso...

Border Fictions offers the first comparative analysis of multiethnic and transnational cultural representations about the United States' borders with Mexico and Canada. Blending textual analysis with theories of globalization and empire, Claudia Sadowski-Smith forges a new model of inter-American studies. Border Fictions places into dialogue a variety of hemispheric perspectives from Chicana/o, Asian American, American Indian, Latin American, and Canadian studies. Each chapter examines fiction that ranges widely, from celebrated authors such as Carlos Fuentes, Leslie Marmon Silko, and Alberto Ríos to writers whose contributions to border literature have not yet been fully appreciated, inclu...
Substantial progress has been made in seed science during the past few years, emphasizing the important role seed biology plays in advancing plant biotechnology, agriculture and plant resource management and conservation. This book describes the status of seed research and technology.
