Metabolomics and Its Impact on Health and Diseases

This volume of the Handbook of Experimental Pharmacology, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2019, addresses the rapidly growing and evolving field of metabolomics. It has been compiled and designed to broaden and enrich your understanding as well as simplify a complicated picture of the diverse field of metabolomics. This is accomplished by chapters from experts in the field on basic principles as well as reviews and updates of analytical techniques. The variety and different perspectives of the NMR approaches are described in the chapters By David Wishart, Daniel Raftery and Ryan McKay, while mass spectrometry advances are covered by Charles R. Evans and Stefan Kempa. This book also...

Electromicrobiology – From Electrons To Ecosystems, Volume II

This Research Topic is part of the Electromicrobiology – From Electrons To Ecosystems: Electromicrobiology – From Electrons To Ecosystems Electromicrobiology is a rapidly evolving multidisciplinary research area dealing with extracellular electron transport (ETC) in various microbes. Microorganisms from different environments have evolved the capacity for extracellular electron exchange, beyond the outer membrane and even through a periplasmic continuum in multicellular bacteria like cable bacteria. This capacity allows them to exchange electrons with one another and to exploit electron acceptors and donors that are distantly located or cannot pass the cell envelope.

Diversity Oriented Synthesis

Has the concept of Diversity Oriented Synthesis remained unchanged over these two decades, or do we observe improvements or deviations from the original guidelines drawn by the pioneers? The aim of this Research Topic is to collect contributions on the state-of-the-art and progress of Diversity Oriented Synthesis, and to foresee its shape in the next decade.

Solar Cells

Solar cell energy is the single most pressing issue facing humanity, with a more technologically advanced society requiring better energy resources. This book discusses technologies broadly, depending on how they capture and distribute solar energy or convert it into solar power. The major areas covered in this book are: • The theory of solar cells, which explains the conversion of light energy in photons into electric current. The theoretical studies are practical because they predict the fundamental limits of a solar cell. • The design and development of thin-film technology-based solar cells. • State of the art for bulk material applied for solar cells based on crystalline silicon (c-Si), also known as “solar grade silicon,” and emerging photovoltaics.

Magnetic Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

Magnetic Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

Magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) have many applications in the biomedical field because of their non-toxicity, high chemical stability, and biocompatibility. They are used in DNA or protein separation, hyperthermia, tissue engineering, magnetic resonance imaging, cancer therapy, drug delivery, bone and dental repair, biosensors, etc. The book focuses on magnetic nanoparticles and coated nanoparticles (ferrites nanoparticles, bimetallic-magnetic nanoparticles, magnetic fluid); their synthesis, characterization, and in vivo or in vitro biomedical applications. Keywords: Iron Oxide Magnetic Nanomaterials, Magnetic Spinel Ferrite Nanoparticles, Magnetic Oxide Nanoparticles, Ferromagnetic Nickel Nanostructures, Cobalt Ferrite with Niobium Pentoxide, Hyperthermia, Oncologic Magnetic Thermotherapy, Cancer Therapy, Cancer Diagnosis, Drug Delivery. Immune System Related Diseases.

Mineral Rites

An archaeology of Western energy culture that demystifies the role that fossil fuels play in the day-to-day rituals of modern life. Spanning the past two hundred years, this book offers an alternative history of modernity that restores to fossil fuels their central role in the growth of capitalism and modernity itself, including the emotional attachments and real injuries that they generate and command. Everything about us—our bodies, minds, sense of self, nature, reason, and faith—has been conditioned by a global infrastructure of carbon flows that saturates our habits, thoughts, and practices. And it is that deep energy infrastructure that provides material for the imagination and sens...

Frontiers of Green Catalytic Selective Oxidations

The demand for novel efficient and environmentally sustainable chemo, regio- and stereoselective catalyst systems for the oxidation of organic substrates is continuously growing in line with toughening economic and environmental constraints. This book addresses these issues; it consists of eleven chapters written by world-recognized experts in green and sustainable oxidation catalysis. The most urgent and challenging topics, in the judgment of the editor, such as green asymmetric epoxidations, sulfoxidatiuons, C–H oxidations; oxidation catalysis by polyoxometalates and oxidations in non-conventional solvents, etc. have been critically reviewed in this book. Both fundamental aspects, such a...

This book is the first volume of two volumes on cyclodextrins published in the series Environmental Chemistry for a Sustainable World. After a brief description of the cyclodextrin fundamentals, the first chapter by Grégorio Crini et al. provides an overview of cyclodextrin research during the last 5 years. The second chapter by Michal Řezanka discusses the synthesis of novel cyclodextrin systems by selective modifications. Then Eric Monflier et al. describes the synthesis of nanostructured porous materials based on cyclodextrins, and applications in heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalysis. The use of thermal analyses for assessing cyclodextrin inclusion complexes is reviewed in chapter 4 by Daniel Hădărugă et al. Experimental methods for measuring binding constants of cyclodextrin inclusion compounds are presented by David Landy. The second volume reviews cyclodextrin applications in medicine, food, environment and liquid crystals.
