The importance and influence of professions in public life has grown increasingly over the twentieth century but the question of whether they subordinate their own self-interests to the public interest has yet to be adequately researched within a major sociological perspective. In Professions and the Public Interest Mike Saks develops a theoretical and methodological framework for assessing professional groups in Western society. The empirical applicability of this framework is demonstrated with particular reference to a novel case study of the response of the medical profession to acupuncture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Professions and the Public Interest will be of great interest to all lecturers and students of social policy, sociology, and medical sociology as well as to professional groups and their members.

African-American Heroes 1776-1919 The Story of Sergeant Neadom Roberts By: Gilbert Wayne Hedgpeth, MHS, CAS, CS About the Book African-American Heroes 1776-1919: The Story Sergeant Neadom Roberts demonstrates the spirit and heroism of an African-American soldier’s patriotic deeds and determination to serve his country despite barriers of racism, segregation, oppression, and discrimination. He persevered onward in great sacrifice, yet records of his service have gone unrecognized, been diminished and forgotten. "For generations of American Catholics, the face of their church was, quite literally, a woman's face. McGuinness recovers the compelling story of these sisters and puts them back at the center of American Catholic history." —James M. O'Toole, Boston College "McGuinness writes with the authority of a scholar and the ease of a storyteller. Her portrait of the women who have for so long represented the face of the American Catholic church will be useful to readers who wish to learn about the often hidden and far-ranging contributions vowed women have made to church and nation." —Kathleen Sprows Cummings, University of Notre Dame For many Americans, nuns and sisters are the face of the Cath...
