Towards Transcultural Awareness in Translation Pedagogy
This volume gathers a wide range of voices in Translation Studies offering theoretical insights and practical ideas on how to tackle the cultural dimension in translation pedagogy. Issues range from curriculum planning to evaluation methods. The volume illustrates that the practice of 'translating culture' in the classroom goes beyond the translation of so-called realia. It also promotes the notion that translation teachers should foster transcultural awareness among their students, whereby intercultural differences and similarities may be negotiated and transcended in the act of translation. Belgische Literaturen in deutscher Übersetzung
Was verraten literarische Übersetzungen über die komplexen kulturellen und historischen Verflechtungen von Belgien und Deutschland? Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage bezieht Anja van de Pol-Tegge erstmals beide belgischen Ausgangssprachen - Französisch und Niederländisch - in ein innovatives Forschungsformat ein. Durch detaillierte Übersetzungsanalysen von Texten namhafter Autor*innen wie Hugo Claus und Amélie Nothomb gibt sie Aufschluss über epistemische Konfigurationen im deutschen Zielkontext. Über Bilder der Fremdwahrnehmung und Selbstidentifikation bildet sie die Wirkmacht sozio-historischer Diskurse auf belgische Literaturen ab und verdichtet diese zu Tendenzen der Translationsdynamik.
Belgien, Deutschland und die 'Anderen'
Für Belgien stehen viele Bilder: Orte der Hauptstadt wie Atomium, Grande Place/Grote Markt oder Manneken Pis. 'Brüssel' steht oft auch als Synonym für die EU oder bedient das Klischee, Belgien sei ein dysfunktionales, von tiefsitzenden Sprachkonflikten geprägtes Staatswesen. Diese und andere deutsch-belgische Fremd- und Selbstbilder stellen einen Schwerpunkt dieses Sammelbandes dar. Er dokumentiert die sechste Tagung des Arbeitskreises Historische Belgienforschung, die im September 2022 in Kooperation mit dem Berliner Zentrum für Antisemitismusforschung stattfand. Die dort betreute Sammlung des Belgiers Arthur Langerman war Ausgangspunkt für den weiteren Schwerpunkt des Bandes: die 'visuelle Geschichte' des Antijudaismus und Antisemitismus sowie verwandter Phänomene wie Antiziganismus, Rassismus oder radikaler Nationalismus. Diskurse, Mechanismen und Praktiken von Diskriminierung, Ausgrenzung und Verfolgung werden ebenso interdisziplinär erörtert wie die Entstehung, Funktionalisierung oder auch das Verblassen von Stereotypen und Feindbildern.

Thomas De Quincey's multivalent engagement with Romantic translation This book investigates how De Quincey's writing was shaped by his work as a translator. Drawing on a wide range of materials and readings, it traces how De Quincey employed structures of interlinguistic and interdiscursive exchange to reimagine Romanticism. The book examines how his theories and practices of translation served to position his oeuvre, define his style, frame his philosophy and reinvent the meaning of literary creativity. Brecht de Groote traces in particular the ways in which De Quincey used translation to locate British Romanticism in its European context. In shedding new light on De Quincey, de Groote models a new translation-centric approach to the study of Romanticism. Brecht de Groote is a Postdoctoral Fellow in the Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication at the University of Ghent.

Applying Luhmann to Translation Studies
This book deals with one of the most prominent and promising developments in modern Translation Studies--the sociology of translation. Tyulenev develops an original way of applying Luhmann's Social Systems Theory to translation, viewing translation as a social-systemic boundary phenomenon.
