Chemical Signals in Vertebrates 12
Three invited international experts present overviews of recent developments in key fields and will submit chapters for the book. Jane Hurst from Liverpool University in the UK presents an overview on the function, mechanisms and evolution of chemical signals, Penelope Hawkins from the University of Western Australia will detail the importance of male odors in female mate-choice and the priming of female reproduction, and Francesco Bonadonna from CNRS-CEFE, Montpellier in France presents an overview of the importance of chemical signals for the formation and maintenance of pair-bonds, parent – offspring recognition and navigation in seabirds. Select submissions are invited by the scientific committee to contribute chapters.
The Impact of Metabolic Stressors on Mitochondrial Homeostasis in a Renal Epithelial Cell Model of Methylmalonic Aciduria
Abstract: Methylmalonic aciduria (MMA-uria) is caused by deficiency of the mitochondrial enzyme methylmalonyl-CoA mutase (MUT). MUT deficiency hampers energy generation from specific amino acids, odd-chain fatty acids and cholesterol. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a well-known long-term complication. We exposed human renal epithelial cells from healthy controls and MMA-uria patients to different culture conditions (normal treatment (NT), high protein (HP) and isoleucine/valine (I/V)) to test the effect of metabolic stressors on renal mitochondrial energy metabolism. Her Piano Sang
At the age of nine, Clara Wieck gave her first public performance as a concert pianist. She played beautifully. When the concert was over, she felt as if she were dancing on a cloud. As she grew older, Clara's concerts took her all over Europe. Audiences adored her, and she became friends with other famous musicians—including her father's student, Robert Schumann. Robert and Clara fell in love and eventually married. Robert took some of Clara's melodies and shaped them into compositions, and Clara performed his pieces, introducing them to new audiences. Throughout her life, Clara Schumann's performances set the standard for piano music. The greatest composers of her time—impressed with the power and beauty of her playing—wrote music for her. Clara was a pianist, composer, and mentor, as well as an inspiration to the romantic movement that was her life. She made the piano sing.

Severe Loss of Appetite and Refusal to Eat as Severe Side Effect of Glycerol Phenylbutyrate
Abstract: Glycerol phenylbutyrate (GPB) is an ammonia scavenger drug commonly used in the therapy of patients with urea cycle defects. Reported side effects include body odor, abdominal pain, nausea, burning sensation in mouth, vomiting, and heartburn. We report on a 3-year-old late diagnosed female patient with ornithine transcarbamylase deficiency that experienced severe loss of appetite under treatment with GBP. Due to catabolism (calory intake about 400 kcal/day) and the associated risk of metabolic decompensation, GBP treatment was discontinued. Her appetite and eating behavior normalized within 1 day after discontinuation of GBP and switch to sodium benzoate. Our case demonstrates that GBP can cause severe loss of appetite that may put patients at risk of metabolic decompensation and require discontinuation of therapy
