Super-Scenic Motorway

The most visited site in the National Park system, the 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway winds along the ridges of the Appalachian mountains in Virginia and North Carolina. According to most accounts, the Parkway was a New Deal "Godsend for the needy," built without conflict or opposition by landscape architects and planners who traced their vision along a scenic, isolated southern landscape. The historical archives relating to this massive public project, however, tell a different and much more complicated story, which Anne Mitchell Whisnant relates in this revealing history of the beloved roadway.

I Knew When I Was Five is an illustrated story that reveals how violence is normalized in our culture, and specifically in our food choices. It supports parents-and adults in general-to see and nurture children's compassion and empathy and reject our cultural reliance on violence, and it empowers people who have felt this tension between their own compassion and what our society expects from them.

We Know is both an invitation to explore an issue that goes largely unnoticed in our society and a companion book to a children's illustrated book published in July 2021. The issue that is largely unnoticed in our society is the deep empathy and compassion human infants and toddlers hold for other living beings. We all find this empathy and compassion cute and heartwarming, but adults (parents, grandparents, teachers?) do little to support its development and actually quite a lot to overcome it. We Know aims to spark a new conversation. The illustrated book is about growing up and coming to terms with the manner in which human beings use non-human beings in a variety of ways in our everyday lives-We Know invites people of all ages to explore how they learned about our use of animals, and to consider how the children they know are learning about these things. To consider how those children might be feeling and give them an opportunity to explore those feelings rather than simply indoctrinating them into the worldview they themselves were indoctrinated into. To explore and support our innate compassion instead.
