ADHD is a highly comorbid disorder in patients with substance use disorders (SUD). This comorbid patient population is, however, often undertreated. Diagnosing ADHD in patients with SUD is not easy due to the large overlap of the ADHD characteristics with symptoms of intoxication and withdrawal. These patients often disappear prematurely from the treatment services, on the one hand because their untreated ADHD symptoms make it more diffi cult to follow the therapy, on the other hand because the treatment programs do not take their limitations into account. ADHD komt veel voor bij mensen met een probleem in het gebruik van alcohol of andere drugs. Toch wordt de diagnose vaak niet gesteld en de stoornis dan ook niet behandeld. Vaak verdwijnen deze cliënten vroegtijdig uit de hulpverlening, enerzijds omdat hun onbehandelde ADHD-symptomen het volgen van de therapie bemoeilijken, anderzijds omdat de behandelprogramma’s geen rekening houden met hun beperkingen. Het stellen van de diagnose is ook niet eenvoudig door de grote overlap van de ADHD-kenmerken met symptomen van intoxicatie en ontwenning. Omdat vele aspecten niet of onvoldoende wetenschappelijk onderzocht zijn, werd ten rade gegaan bij experten uit het werkveld. An Ethics of Mercy
Sexual experimentation, living together, raising children outside of marriage, remarriage after divorce, and same-sex relationships... These behaviours have become common in the wider society as well as among Christians and Catholic Christians. Not only do they think and act differently than the official Church teaching, but they do so convinced that they are acting rightly. This challenges ethics to respond by what can be called an 'ethics of mercy', by meeting people where they are and helping them to grow towards the fullness of life and love. Such a pastoral and educational ethics of growth should dare to stand within the tension between what is desirable and what is attainable, without surrendering the 'pro-vocative' idea of conjugal covenant as the basis for the family.
