In January 2015, the Institute of Medicine conducted a study to determine the incidence and prevalence, as well as the risk of developing multiple sclerosis (MS) and other neurologic diseases as a result of service in the 1990-1991 Persian Gulf and post 9/11 Global Operations theaters. The other neurologic diseases to be considered include: Parkinson's disease, and brain cancers, as well as central nervous system abnormalities that are difficult to precisely diagnose. There are nearly 1,000,000 Americans living with MS, but their personal stories are rarely told. Resilience in the Face of Multiple Sclerosis is a narrative non-fiction book about incredible people who suffer from MS, and I seek to share the wisdom implicit in their lives and achievements. My five subjects include a neurologist, a psychiatrist, a political activist, a young blind man, and a woman with advanced multiple sclerosis, all who live productive and fulfilling lives despite significant adversity.
