Intracellular Antibodies

Recent advances in the field of recombinant antibodies have permitted the manipulation of genes encoding specific antibodies, thus allowing their ectopic expression in a wide variety of non-lymphoid cells. This volume describes how the ectopic expression of antibodies, as secreted or as intracellularly retargeted molecules, can be exploited to block biological functions or to confer new phenotypic traits (e.g. resistance to a virus). This is the first book describing this emerging technology, which is receiving increasing attention for application in many different fields and biological systems - from human gene therapy to plant biotechnology.

Antibody Engineering

Interest in recombinant antibody technologies has rapidly increased because of its wide range of possible applications in therapy, diagnosis, and especially, cancer treatment. The possibility of generating human antibodies that are not accessible by conventional polyclonal or monoclonal approaches has facilitated the development of antibody engineering technologies. This manual presents a comprehensive collection of detailed step-by-step protocols, provided by experts. The text covers all basic methods needed in antibody engineering as well as recently developed and emerging technologies.

Biology of Brain Disorders

Brain disorders, including neurological and neuropsychiatric conditions, represent a challenge for public health systems and society at large. The limited knowledge of their biology hampers the development of diagnostic tools and effective therapeutics. A clear understanding of the mechanisms that underlie the onset and progression of brain disorders is required in order to identify new avenues for therapeutic intervention. Overlapping genetic risk factors across different brain disorders suggest common linkages and pathophysiological mechanisms that underlie brain disorders. Methodological and technological advances are leading to new insights that go beyond traditional hypotheses. Taking a...

"For the instructor of Introduction to Neuroscience or Neurobiology courses with students who are intimidated by the study of the brain, our textbook From Neuron to Brain is designed to present difficult material on the nervous system through the process of experimentation. Lines of research are followed from the inception of an idea to new findings being made in laboratories and clinics today, allowing students to follow the path of experimentation toward an understanding of how the nervous system works. Nicholls et al. have built a readable and informative text that explains how nerve cells go about their business of transmitting signals, how the signals are put together, and how higher function emerges from this integration, all in an accessible and exciting way that will appeal to students. From Neuron to Brain, Sixth Edition and its exploration of the intricate workings of the nervous system will be of interest to instructors teaching undergraduate, graduate, and medical school courses in neuroscience"--

Multiple Sclerosis and Related Disorders: Challenges and Approaches to Mechanisms, Biomarkers, and Therapeutic Targets

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune condition that causes inflammatory damage to the central nervous system. The pathologic features are diffuse and focal inflammation, demyelination, gliosis, and neuronal damage in the optic nerves, brain, and spinal cord. Multiple sclerosis remains a challenging and disabling disease. There is a greater understanding of the underlying genetic and environmental factors driving the disorder, including low vitamin D levels, smoking, and obesity. Early and accurate diagnosis is essential and needs to be supported by diagnostic criteria, including imaging and spinal fluid abnormalities in patients with clinically isolated syndromes. Other demyelinating diseases are neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorders (NMOSD), anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody disease (MOGAD), and acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM).
