“Like a matured painter who is very particular in choosing the right and profound colours to draw a masterpiece, Anu has exhibited abundance of talent as a conscious artist in choosing the right words and putting them at the right place in her compositions for effectively creating the magic of lovely poetic creations”- R. K. Das, Director, Rajya Sabha, Parliament of India (‘Of The Lesser Known’) “Anu has good talent, command and control of words and has fruitful imagination. The poetess appears to be a sensitive soul which reminds us of the old saying, ‘the heart has its own reasons that the head cannot understand”- Dr. Alexander Jacod, I.P.S (‘When My Heart Speaks”) Anu Jo...
Written in simple rhyme, the poems touch upon emotions, nature and imaginative situations. Other styles of poetry also have a place in the book: Acrostic, Rictameter, Haiku and Onomatopoeia. The first letter of each new line when put together forms a word/name. This is Acrostic; but the poet has also written the poem in rhyme. In Rictameter style, the poem has a diamond shaped look, as it is written in a certain number of syllables per line, in ascending and descending orders. Haiku poetry is a thought or a scene expressed in just three lines. Onomatopoeia is a poem in which sounds are expressed in words. The Songs section includes a patriotic poem, Jai Hind My India, and three children's poems, Lullaby, A Child's Song and My Little Airplane. This book of poems is sure to keep the reader enthralled.
"When twenty-five-year-old Judith Jones began working as a secretary at Doubleday's newly opened Paris office in 1949, she was tasked with wading through manuscripts in the slush pile until one caught her eye. She read the book in one sitting, then begged her boss to consider publishing it. A year later, Anne Frank: The Diary of a Young Girl became a bestseller. ... Over more than half a century as an editor at Knopf, Jones became a legend, nurturing future literary icons such as Sylvia Plath, Anne Tyler, and John Updike. At the forefront of the cookbook revolution, she published the who's who of food writing: Edna Lewis, M.F.K. Fisher, Claudia Roden, Madhur Jaffrey, James Beard, and, most famously, Julia Child. ... Now, her astonishing career is explored for the first time. Based on exclusive interviews, never-before-seen personal papers, and years of research, The Editor tells the riveting behind-the-scenes narrative of how stories are made, finally bringing to light the audacious life of one of our most influential tastemakers"--
Are we deranged? The acclaimed Indian novelist Amitav Ghosh argues that future generations may well think so. How else to explain our imaginative failure in the face of global warming? In his first major book of nonfiction since In an Antique Land, Ghosh examines our inability—at the level of literature, history, and politics—to grasp the scale and violence of climate change. The extreme nature of today’s climate events, Ghosh asserts, make them peculiarly resistant to contemporary modes of thinking and imagining. This is particularly true of serious literary fiction: hundred-year storms and freakish tornadoes simply feel too improbable for the novel; they are automatically consigned t...
"Culture was untouchable. Their mixing would, and had in the past, proved to be extremely detrimental to peace and quiet.' A world in which people have no regional affiliations. Where culture itself has gone mobile. Where the President, the man with the most power, has little to do but swim and play golf. Where ordinary people like Gru and Ronan care little about where they come from and where they are headed – and this whole system is balanced on just two simple laws. In this dystopian world, the only equalising factor is gunshots. Will the Gunshot Victims Unit, the last line of defence, be enough?"
An enlightening and entertaining interrogation of the myth of American self-reliance and the idea of hard work as destiny “Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration.” This phrase, arguably Thomas Edison’s most famous quote, has been drilled into the minds of generations of Americans. A fairly straightforward iteration of the idea that innovation, discovery, and ingenuity are the result of drive and grit above all, it has also come to represent much darker myths: that hard work always leads to success and that achievement is the product of individuals and not communities. In this model, those who come out on top are there because they earned it, and everyone...
