"The origin and development of the khan, also known as caravanserai or roadside inns, is an area of research that has not been extensively addressed in existing studies on the Islamic history and archaeology of Jordan. This is despite the historic importance of khans as way stations for pilgrims undertaking the hajj pilgrimage and their ubiquitous presence throughout the Jordanian landscape. Previous studies that have been carried out on the khans, have been either very general or restricted in terms of geography and chronological/historical scope. Therefore, the present study will include a diachronic study of the development of a particular khan-the Aqaba castle-being an important Islamic ...
The port of Aila at the northern end of the Aila Gulf in Jordan was an important shipping port serving the capital at Petra as well as a stopping-off point on the caravan routes from the east.
Featured are thirty-seven illustrations that highlight the magnificence that was the great Islamic port of Ayla on the Gulf of Aqaba. The site is located in modern Aqaba, Jordan and has been excavated by the Oriental Institute under the directorship of Donald Whitcomb since 1986.
Jordan is a place unlike any other. With Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria and Israel and Palestine on its borders, as well as the Red Sea and Dead Sea, it's the crossroads of not only the Middle East, but of Asia, Europe and Africa. On Jordan's southern shoreline sits the vibrant port city of Aqaba, and it was here that Rev. Laurence Hubbard found himself in 1997 as the chaplain for the Missions to Seamen (now Mission to Seafarers). Without a doubt, this locale was different from Laurence's native England in so many ways, and yet the landscape was compellingly familiar: it has a huge number of Biblical sites and associations, and thus it was a landscape Laurence just had to explore - and explore it he did. This fascinating book - part memoir, part history - touches on 4,000 years of history as examined through the eyes of an Englishman nurturing the rebirth of Christianity in the Arab world. It also paints colourful pictures of the diverse multitude of locals and seafarers who touched Rev. Laurence's life during his time in Aqaba, and considers the city's future as commercialism arrives at this ancient settlement.

Volume 2 continues the saga of this incredible 91-day voyage across European, Middle Eastern, and Far Eastern ports. High points of this book reviews ports in Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and India, all in the Far East. We then journeyed to Oman and Jordan, visiting al-Aqabah and Petra. We then journeyed through the Suez Canal to Italy, Corsica, then to ports in Spain, to Southhampton, England, and finally to the city of Rotterdam, where we had first begun the journey. As in Volume 1, I review the history of each stopping point, reflecting on its unique culture and people, while visiting local sights of wonder. This journey was for me as a kind of vast exploration of the world, a way to share this time with others. I hope I've done justice to the experience. It changed my outlook in life as I ponder the vastness of humanity across the span of a vast territory.
