The Castrato
The Castrato is a nuanced exploration of why innumerable boys were castrated for singing between the mid-sixteenth and late-nineteenth centuries. It shows that the entire foundation of Western classical singing, culminating in bel canto, was birthed from an unlikely and historically unique set of desires, public and private, aesthetic, economic, and political. In Italy, castration for singing was understood through the lens of Catholic blood sacrifice as expressed in idioms of offering and renunciation and, paradoxically, in satire, verbal abuse, and even the symbolism of the castrato’s comic cousin Pulcinella. Sacrifice in turn was inseparable from the system of patriarchy—involving teachers, patrons, colleagues, and relatives—whereby castrated males were produced not as nonmen, as often thought nowadays, but as idealized males. Yet what captivated audiences and composers—from Cavalli and Pergolesi to Handel, Mozart, and Rossini—were the extraordinary capacities of castrato voices, a phenomenon ultimately unsettled by Enlightenment morality. Although the castrati failed to survive, their musicality and vocality have persisted long past their literal demise.

The religious association of Jehovah’s Witnesses has existed for about 150 years in Europe. How Jehovah’s Witnesses found their way in these countries has depended upon the way this missionary association was treated by the majority of the non-Witness population, the government and established churches. In this respect, the history of Jehovah’s Witnesses in Europe is also a history of the social constitution of these countries and their willingness to accept and integrate religious minorities. Jehovah’s Witnesses faced suppression and persecution not only in dictatorships, but also in some democratic states. In other countries, however, they developed in relative freedom. How the different situations in the various national societies affected the religious association and what challenges Jehovah’s Witnesses had to overcome – and still do in part even until our day – is the theme of this history volume.

Il libro racconta la transizione del papato dalla fine dell’antico regime agli ultimi tre pontificati, nuovi ma con limiti evidenti di governo. In una crisi profonda del cattolicesimo l’assolutismo papale sembra essere al suo apogeo ma non riesce a riformare la curia romana e si scontra con difficoltà serie: il rapporto con il denaro, la comunicazione, la problematica santità papale. L’eredità di Ratzinger resta fondamentale, tra l’altro, per il rapporto con l’ebraismo, per la riflessione sull’estinguersi della fede in Occidente e per l’azione lucida e determinata contro lo scandalo degli abusi, ma poco efficace è stato il suo governo. Irrisolto e contraddittorio risulta invece il pontificato di Bergoglio, caratterizzato da una decisa volontà riformatrice ma anche da scelte che hanno finito per accentuare le divisioni nella Chiesa, rendendo in questo modo urgente una riflessione sull’esercizio del potere papale e sulla collegialità episcopale.
