The House in Grosvenor Square

Readers who loved the author's first book, Before the Season Ends, will delight in this charming sequel set in Regency London. As Ariana Forsythe plans her wedding to Philip Mornay, she must adjust to the realization that she is soon to become the wife of an extremely wealthy man. She wonders if it's wrong to rejoice that her future husband is rich. But she promises herself to use her new position to do what she can to aid the numerous street waifs she sees all too often in London. During a tour of her future home—the house in Grosvenor Square—Ariana makes plans to redecorate according to her tastes. But when Philip arrives home later, he is informed that an expensive silver candlestick ...

Molecular Chaperones and Neurodegeneration

Molecular chaperones or heat-shock proteins (HSPs) play essential roles in safeguarding structural stability and preventing misfolding and aggregation of proteins, and maintaining the proteome functionality in the cell. For over two decades until the present time, new functions have been discovered and several molecular mechanisms have been elucidated for many chaperones, while the field is being continuously challenged by new open questions. Probably as a consequence of the increasing research on the molecular bases of neurodegenerative diseases, and the realisation that many such disorders are linked to protein misfolding processes, unleashing the roles and mechanisms of chaperones in the context of neurodegeneration has become a prime scientific goal. This e-book contains a diversity of reviews, perspective and original research articles highlighting the importance and potential of this emerging subject.

Ariana's Pride

Ariana awoke to the sun shining in her eyes through the unglazed window, a slight smile on her face. She stretched her arms over her head, rolling onto her back. She'd had the most wonderful dream. A man's hands caressing her bare flesh softly, a man's strong arms around her, holding her close, murmuring soothing words into her ear. She felt the unfamiliar straw under her and her eyes flew open. She stared around her wildly, not knowing where she was or how she got there. She tried to sit up but felt dizzy and fell back onto the make-shift pallet, her hands clutching the rough blanket to her naked body. "Dear God, where are my clothes? How did I come to be here?” she thought frantically. I...

Heads of Families at the First Census of the United States Taken in the Year 1790

"No other official record or group of records is as historically significant as the 1790 census of the United States. The taking of this census marked the inauguration of a process that continues right up to our own day--the enumeration at ten-year intervals of the entire American population" -- publisher website (June 2007).

Distributed Networks - New Outlooks on Cerebellar Function

Accumulating evidence suggests that the cerebellum subserves functions beyond the sensorimotor realm. This possibility has received considerable attention during the past quarter century, with recent findings revealing putative cerebellar roles in cognition, emotion and spatial navigation. These functions are potentially underpinned by the behaviour-dependent formation of functional networks in which the cerebellum forms one node of distributed circuits spanning thalamic, limbic and neocortical regions. However, these views are not universally accepted. Therefore, the over-arching aim of this Research Topic was to provide a forum through which the debate on the role of cerebellar interactions with motor and "non-motor" structures can be pursued in a rigorous manner. In particular, we aimed to bring together findings from the clinical, animal, theoretical and neuroimaging fields.

Neuronal Oscillations of Wakefulness and Sleep

The purpose of this work is to review recent findings highlighting the mechanisms and functions of the neuronal oscillations that structure brain activity across the sleep-wake cycle. An increasing number of studies conducted in humans and animals, and using a variety of techniques ranging from intracellular recording to functional neuroimaging, has provided important insight into the mechanisms and functional properties of these brain rhythms. Studies of these rhythms are fundamental not only for basic neuroscience, but also for clinical neuroscience. At the basic science level, neuronal oscillations shape the interactions between different areas of the brain and profoundly impact neural re...
