Measuring and Monitoring Immigrant Integration in Europe
Europe is a favoured destination for many migrants. The region's economic prosperity, relatively high level of political stability and democratic principles are appealing to many migrants, whether they be asylum-seekers or regular migrants in search of work or looking to study. In this book we examine views on integration in 17 European countries, and explore how these are translated into national policy and what efforts are being made in the various countries to map out the integration processes of migrants and track them over time. The different chapters in this book present a kaleidoscopic overview of opinions about integration and the efforts to make integration measurable in practice. Europe has spent more than ten years trying to achieve greater uniformity in integration policy across the Member States. However, from this book we learn that we have to accept that harmonisation in the monitoring of immigrant integration in Europe is still some way off
The Quality of Divided Democracies
The Quality of Divided Democracies contemplates how democracy works, or fails to work, in ethnoculturally divided societies. It advances a new theoretical approach to assessing quality of democracy in divided societies, and puts it into practice with the focused comparison of two divided democracies—Estonia and Latvia. The book uses rich comparative data to tackle the vital questions of what determines a democracy’s level of inclusiveness and the ways in which minorities can gain access to the policy-making process. It uncovers a “voice–polarization dilemma” for minorities’ inclusion in the democratic process, which has implications for academic debates on minority representation and ethnic politics, as well as practical implications for international and national institutions’ promotion of minority rights.
Chasing Warsaw
Warsaw is one of the most dynamically developing cities in Europe, and its rich history has marked it as an epicenter of many modes of urbanism: Tzarist, modernist, socialist, and--in the past two decades--aggressively neoliberal. A Day with the Dutch
How do people in the Netherlands use their time, and are there any differences when compared with other countries? This study of time use in daily life makes it possible to compare Dutch time use with time use in other countries based on a harmonised European Time Use Survey design. Besides the Netherlands, this study incorporates time use data for Belgium, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Slovenia, Poland, Bulgaria, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Spain, and Italy. The study provides a snapshot of an average day in the life of persons aged 20 to 74 years. The activities covered are personal care (sleeping, eating), obligations (study, paid work, household tasks, and child care), free time, and travel time. The study devotes particular attention to gender differences in time use as well. It also offers an overall picture of associations in time use between the countries studied.

Living with Intersex/DSD
Intersex/DSD is an umbrella term used to describe various congenital conditions in which the development of sex differs from what medical professionals generally understand to be "male" or "female." The differences may be chromosomal, gonadal, or anatomical. There is growing international political attention for the position of people with intersex/DSD. At the same time, there is as yet little solid, research-based knowledge. This exploratory study documents what is currently known about the social situation of people with intersex/DSD in the Netherlands and what problems they may encounter. This exploratory study was carried out at the request of the Emancipation Department of the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science.

Constructing Vernacular Culture in the Trans-Caribbean traces the contradictory cultural trajectories constructed and re-produced in the fluid diasporic spaces we call the Trans-Caribbean. More people on the streets means better social control, is the thought behind this strategy. But do people on the streets have consideration for each other?
