The Thin Brown Line
This study critically examines inequality within New Zealand's indigenous Māori population. Specifically it asks whether strong ties to Māori identity incur higher socio-economic costs. Historical expository analysis is undertaken in concert with statistical analyses of data from the New Zealand Census of Population and Dwellings (1996, 2001, 2006), and a longitudinal study of Māori households. I find strong evidence of ethnic and socio-economic segmentation within the Māori population. Measuring and Monitoring Immigrant Integration in Europe
Europe is a favoured destination for many migrants. The region's economic prosperity, relatively high level of political stability and democratic principles are appealing to many migrants, whether they be asylum-seekers or regular migrants in search of work or looking to study. In this book we examine views on integration in 17 European countries, and explore how these are translated into national policy and what efforts are being made in the various countries to map out the integration processes of migrants and track them over time. The different chapters in this book present a kaleidoscopic overview of opinions about integration and the efforts to make integration measurable in practice. Europe has spent more than ten years trying to achieve greater uniformity in integration policy across the Member States. However, from this book we learn that we have to accept that harmonisation in the monitoring of immigrant integration in Europe is still some way off

The book uses rich comparative data to tackle the vital questions of what determines a democracy’s level of inclusiveness and the ways in which minorities can gain access to the policy-making process. It uncovers a “voice–polarization dilemma” for minorities’ inclusion in the democratic process, which has implications for academic debates on minority representation and ethnic politics, as well as practical implications for international and national institutions’ promotion of minority rights.

Unmet Need in Psychiatry
This book considers ways to resolve the imbalance between the demand and supply of mental health services. Treatment services in most countries reach only a minority of people identified as suffering from a mental disorder. Few countries can provide adequate health services for all the mentally ill, yet none has developed a rational system to decide who should be treated. The questions are clear. Could we develop a staged treatment process to reach all in need? If not, how do we decide who to treat? What should the criteria be for deployment of scarce treatment resources? How do we determine such criteria? What are the ethical implications of applying such criteria? In this pioneering work, an international team of eminent psychiatrists, epidemiologists, health administrators, economists and health planners examine these questions. The result will inform and encourage all concerned with the equitable provision of mental health care.
