This book provides researchers and teachers of different disciplines, such as literature, cultural studies, and applied linguistics, with a deeper understanding of the autobiography, both as a genre and a data collection method. The book presents a variety of forms of autobiographies produced in varied fields, including confessional poems, politicians’ autobiographies, and autobiographical novels. Unique among these autobiographies are those that were produced in the field of education, namely foreign language education. The richness of the studies reported in the chapters lies in the wide variety of qualitative and quantitative analytical tools borrowed from different disciplines (mainly applied linguistics and ethnography). The book features conceptual metaphor analysis, appraisal theory, multimodality analysis, generic analysis, and content analysis.
This study of the Tunisian army and government in the time of the pasha-bey Hammûda the Husaynid (1777--1814) stresses the deeply Ottoman character of these institutions and the political and administrative impact of the jurisdictional authority of the Ottoman Porte on the province in general. This work thus initiates a systematic revision of a major thesis that has prevailed in the body of contemporary research on the Tunisian Regency. Asma Moalla shows that the Regency's administrative and political evolution from the end of the sixteenth century to the end of the nineteenth was not a process of a gradual and irreversible emancipation from the influence and authority of the central Ottoman state.

Public interest in the religion of Islam and in Muslim communities in recent years has generated an impetus for Western Universities to establish an array of Institutes and programs dedicated to the study of Islam. Despite the growth in number of programs dedicated to this study, very little attention has been paid to the appropriate shape of such programs and the assumptions that ought to underlie such a study. The Teaching and Study of Islam in Western Universities attempts to address two central questions that arise through the teaching of Islam. Firstly, what relation is there between the study of the religion of Islam and the study of those cultures that have been shaped by that religion?
