Testbeds and Research Infrastructures, Development of Networks and Communities
This book constitutes the proceedings of the 6th International ICST Conference, TridentCom 2010, held in Berlin, Germany, in May 2010. Out of more than 100 submitted contributions the Program Committee finally selected 15 full papers, 26 practices papers, and 22 posters. They focus on topics as Internet testbeds, future Internet research, wireless sensors, media and mobility, and monitoring in large scale testbeds.
Innovation, Communication and Engineering
This volume represents the proceedings of the 2013 International Conference on Innovation, Communication and Engineering (ICICE 2013). This conference was organized by the China University of Petroleum (Huadong/East China) and the Taiwanese Institute of Knowledge Innovation, and was held in Qingdao, Shandong, P.R. China, October 26 - November 1, 2013. The conference received 653 submitted papers from 10 countries, of which 214 papers were selected by the committees to be presented at ICICE 2013. The conference provided a unified communication platform for researchers in a wide range of fields from information technology, communication science, and applied mathematics, to computer science, advanced material science, design and engineering. This volume enables interdisciplinary collaboration between science and engineering technologists in academia and industry as well as networking internationally. Bulgarians by Birth is a collection of sources concerning the revolt of the Comitopuls and the Empire of Samuel, as well as the war between Bulgaria and Byzantium in the late 10th and early 11th century. Each source is accompanied by an extensive commentary. It is the first collection of sources in translation on this topic to be published.
Warriors, Martyrs, and Dervishes
Warriors, Martyrs, and Dervishes: Moving Frontiers, Shifting Identities in the Land of Rome (13th-15th Centuries) focuses on the perceptions of geopolitical and cultural change, which was triggered by the arrival of Turkish Muslim groups into the territories of the Byzantine Empire at the end of the eleventh century, through intersecting stories transmitted in Turkish Muslim warrior epics and dervish vitas, and late Byzantine martyria. It examines the Byzantines’ encounters with the newcomers in a shared story-world, here called “land of Rome,” as well as its perception, changing geopolitical and cultural frontiers, and in relation to these changes, the shifts in identity of the people inhabiting this space. The Pontus of the nineteenth-century travellers
This book is about the Pontus as seen and described by Western travellers of the 19th century. The information offered by these travellers was examined in the process of determining on the map the route of the Retreat of the Ten Thousand, as narrated by Xenophon in his Anabasis. The problems associated with this determination are addressed in a book written in parallel with the present one (Iordanis Paradeisopoulos (2023), Xenophon’s Riddle.
