An Introduction to Differential Geometry and Topology in Mathematical Physics

This book gives an outline of the developments of differential geometry and topology in the twentieth century, especially those which will be closely related to new discoveries in theoretical physics.

Markov Chains and Dependability Theory

Dependability metrics are omnipresent in every engineering field, from simple ones through to more complex measures combining performance and dependability aspects of systems. This book presents the mathematical basis of the analysis of these metrics in the most used framework, Markov models, describing both basic results and specialised techniques. The authors first present both discrete and continuous time Markov chains before focusing on dependability measures, which necessitate the study of Markov chains on a subset of states representing different user satisfaction levels for the modelled system. Topics covered include Markovian state lumping, analysis of sojourns on subset of states of Markov chains, analysis of most dependability metrics, fundamentals of performability analysis, and bounding and simulation techniques designed to evaluate dependability measures. The book is of interest to graduate students and researchers in all areas of engineering where the concepts of lifetime, repair duration, availability, reliability and risk are important.

Two-sided Projective Resolutions, Periodicity and Local Algebras

Two-sided Projective Resolutions, Periodicity and Local Algebras

This book introduces a new point of view on two-sided projective resolutions of associative algebras. By gluing the vertices we associate a local algebra A_{locto any finite dimensional algebra A. We try to derive information on the cohomology of A from the associated local algebra A_{loc, that is from the local equivalence class of A. For instance, the Anick-Green resolution is minimal for A if and only if it is so for A_{loc. We can read off the relations of A whether there is a locally equivalent algebra that has a finite or a periodic bimodule resolution over itself. Comparing an algebra A and an associated monomial algebra A_{mon, there are inequalities of the following kind: If the resolution of the monomial algebra A_{monis locally finite, then the resolution of A is locally finite. If the resolution of A_{monis locally periodic, then the resolution of A is either locally finite or locally almost periodic.

M”bius Inversion in Physics

M”bius Inversion in Physics

This book attempts to bridge the gap between the principles of pure mathematics and the applications in physical science. After the Mbius inversion formula had been considered as purely academic, or beyond what was useful in the physics community for more than 150 years, the apparently obscure result in classical mathematics suddenly appears to be connected to a variety of important inverse problems in physical science. This book only requires readers to have some background in elementary calculus and general physics, and prerequisite knowledge of number theory is not needed. It will be attractive to our multidisciplinary readers interested in the Mbius technique, which is a tiny but important part of the number-theoretic methods. It will inspire many students and researchers in both physics and mathematics. In a practical problem, continuity and discreteness are often correlated, and few textbook have given attention to this wide and important field as this book. Clearly, this book will be an essential supplement for many existing courses such as mathematical physics, elementary number theory and discrete mathematics.
