Contemporary Dutch designer Aldo Bakker blurs the boundaries between art and design Dutch designer Aldo Bakker (born 1971) is famous for the creation of experimental shapes that blur the boundaries between art and design. Bakker established his international reputation in 2010 with the Copper Collection, a series of everyday products like watering cans and mixing bowls made from copper. Bakker's work can be found in the collections of the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Vitra Museum and the Stedelijk Museum.
The Twin
When his twin brother dies in a car accident, Helmer is obliged to return to the small family farm. He resigns himself to taking over his brother's role and spending the rest of his days 'with his head under a cow'. After his old, worn-out father has been transferred upstairs, Helmer sets about furnishing the rest of the house according to his own minimal preferences. 'A double bed and a duvet', advises Ada, who lives next door, with a sly look. Then Riet appears, the woman once engaged to marry his twin. Could Riet and her son live with him for a while, on the farm?'The Twin' is an ode to the platteland, the flat and bleak Dutch countryside with its ditches and its cows and its endless grey skies. Ostensibly a novel about the countryside, as seen through the eyes of a farmer, 'the Twin' is, in the end, about the possibility or impossibility of taking life into one's own hands. Maarten Van Severen Chair
In 2015 The Maarten Van Severen Foundation and the Department of Design of KASK / School of Arts Ghent decided to establish a chair with the aim of conveying the relevance and significance of Maarten Van Severens work for todays designers. Every year a leading designer, whose work has an affinity with the work of Maarten Van Severen, will give a lecture and a masterclass. He or she will reflect on the common ground between their work and that of Maarten van Severen and on the qualities of his work in light of the current design culture. The first edition was in the hands of Erwan Bouroullec. The second edition was done by Alfredo Häberli. In February / March 2018, Dutch designer Aldo Bakker gave a lecture and a masterclass with 14 students from 6 different schools. The result is a fascinating collection of cutlery, which we proudly present as the third MVSC Cahier the 6th of March at Miry Concert hall in Ghent. It contains a transcription of Aldo Bakker's lecture, an interview with Bakker and a visual overview of the masterclass that documents the students progress.
