Der Band vereint die neuesten Forschungsergebnisse zu der von Rudolf IV. initiierten Erweiterung der Wiener Stephanskirche in Hinblick auf seine Grablege, die auf einer interdisziplinär ausgerichteten Tagung diskutiert wurden. Neben einer Darstellung der Bauchronologie nach den Schriftquellen, einer profunden kunsthistorischen Einordnung des Hallenchores mit seiner künstlerisch und ikonographisch außergewöhnlichen Bauplastik werden Beobachtungen zur Bauausführung an der markanten Schnittstelle von Langhaus und Südturm dargelegt. Im Fokus des Sammelbandes stehen umfangreiche Analysen der beiden kunsthistorisch bedeutenden Fürstenportale und des Rudolfskenotaphs. Hinter der Umsetzung des ambitionierten herzoglichen Vorhabens muss ein groß organisierter Baubetrieb gestanden haben.
