Geochemical Atlas of Eastern Barents Region
From 1999 to 2003 a multipurpose regional geochemical mapping project, was carried out in Finland, and the NW-part of Russia. An important aim of the project is to define the anthropogenic impact in relation to the natural variations in regional geochemical baselines of heavy metals and other elements over a large area containing several of the largest industrial emitters in Europe but also some of its most pristine areas. Arctic Geology and Petroleum Potential
Since the search for hydrocarbon resources in the Arctic started in the 1930's the exploration activity has expanded into many of the Arctic regions, and several of the Arctic sedimentary basins have proven to be important sources of hydrocarbon. Nevertheless, the Arctic continental margins and adjacent onshore areas are still largely unexplored in the context of petroleum, and are therefore considered to be one of the few regions in the world where significant undiscovered sources of hydrocarbon may exist. Ecosystem Barents Sea
This book describes the marine ecosystem of the Barents Sea, located north of Norway and Russia as part of the Arctic Ocean. Basic knowledge is presented about components of the ecosystem from virus and bacteria via plankton and fish to seabirds through to marine mammals and their interactions with the physical environment. Ecosystem dynamics are given a prominent role in the book. Mathematical models of the plankton and important fish stocks are employed to help elucidate the interplay between populations and trophic levels. The situation regarding contaminants is reviewed, as is the newly established Norwegian plan for the management of the Barents Sea. The impact of global warming is also discussed. Ecosystem Barents Sea is written for all those with an interest in marine ecology in the arctic seas, including research institutes, governmental ecosystem management units, and natural resources organizations.
Petroleum Exploration and Exploitation in Norway
This conference was arranged by the Norwegian Petroleum Society in order to commemorate the first 25 years of exploration on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. Sixty papers and posters were presented of which 25 have been selected for this volume.Since the start of exploration activities during the mid 1960's the North Sea has not only proved to be one of the main petroleum provinces in the world, but has also established itself as an excellent laboratory for geoscientific research and application. This development has been stimulated greatly by the openess towards exchange of technical data encouragement by the Norwegian authorities.The objective of this book is to assess the results of 25 years of exploration in Norway. It focuses on lessons learned from past experiences as well as considering future challenges facing geoscientists in the industry (relating to both exploration and exploitation activities). Included, are papers which assess the status and future trends of exploration in the main geological provinces on the Norwegian Continental Shelf from the Central Graben in the south to Svalbard and the Russian Artic in the north.
Future of biodiversity in the Barents Region
Climate change may affect biodiversity to a large extent. Its effects have already caused shifts in species distributions and even species extinctions. Since especially high latitude regions are expected to be affected, this publication assesses the impact of future climate change on the biodiversity in the Barents Region (northern parts of Norway, Sweden and Finland, and Northwest Russia). It reports on the impact of climate change on a large range of species, including amphibians, butterflies, birds, mammals, moths, plants, slugs, snails, and reptiles, of which a few were studied more in depth. It further identifies future hotspots of species diversity and gives recommendations on species that should be prioritized for conservation and on areas that should be included in the network of protected areas in future. Lastly, it provides guidance on which aspects require further study.
