Post-earthquake fire is one of the most complicated problems resulting from earthquakes and presents a serious risk to urban structures. Most standards and codes ignore the possibility of post-earthquake fire; thus it is not factored in when determining the ability of buildings to withstand load. This book describes the effects of post-earthquake fire on partially damaged buildings located in seismic urban regions. The book quantifies the level of associated post-earthquake fire effects, and discusses methods for mitigating the risk at both the macro scale and micro scale. The macro scale strategies address urban regions while the micro scale strategies address building structures, covering both existing buildings and those that are yet to be designed.

A scathing critique of proposals to geoengineer our way out of climate disaster by the bestselling author of How to Blow Up a Pipeline It might soon be far too hot on this planet. What do we do then? In the era of "overshoot," schemes abound for turning down the heat–not now, but a few decades down the road. We’re being told that we can return to liveable temperatures by means of technologies for removing CO2 from the air or blocking incoming sunlight. If they even exist, such technologies are not safe. They come with immense uncertainties and risks. Worse, like magical promises of future redemption, they might provide reasons for continuing to emit in the present. But do they also hold s...

While the word "automation" may conjure images of robots taking over jobs, the reality is much more nuanced. In construction, for instance, automation is less likely to diminish employment opportunities than it is to increase productivity. Indeed, automation alongside the global need for new and updated infrastructure and better and more affordable housing can help shape the direction of the construction industry. The key will be anticipating and preparing for the shift, in part by developing new skills in the current and future workforce. This book presents all aspects of automation in construction pertaining to the use of information technologies in design, engineering, construction techno...

Integrated Disaster Science and Management: Global Case Studies in Mitigation and Recovery bridges the gap between scientific research on natural disasters and the practice of disaster management. It examines natural hazards, including earthquakes, landslides and tsunamis, and uses integrated disaster management techniques, quantitative methods and big data analytics to create early warning models to mitigate impacts of these hazards and reduce the risk of disaster. It also looks at mitigation as part of the recovery process after a disaster, as in the case of the Nepal earthquake. Edited by global experts in disaster management and engineering, the book offers case studies that focus on the critical phases of disaster management. Identifies advanced techniques and models based on natural disaster science for forecasting disasters and analyzing risk Offers a holistic approach to the problem of disaster management, including preparation, recovery, and resilience Includes coverage of social, economic, and environmental impacts on disasters

Concrete and Concrete Structures: A Review and Directions for Research opens with a chapter by Juan M Moro, Romina S Meneses, and Néstor F Ortega presenting research on recycled concrete in an effort to improve durability. Next, Germán D Ercolani, Néstor F Ortega, and Daniel H Felix examine different methods of crack detection to determine the best course of repair. Rina (Irina) Wasserman discusses a study on alkali-solutions-caused changes in cement pastes and concretes, after which Romina S Meneses, Juan M Moro, and Néstor F Ortega deliberate on research on corrosion in structural elements of reinforced concrete exposed to flexion. Following this, Alireza Joshaghani explores the durability of concrete prepared with sugarcane bagasse ash. Behrouz Behnam investigates the post-earthquake fire resistance of reinforced concrete structures. Continuing, Néstor F. Ortega exhibits results of a study focusing on the performance of reinforced concrete beams exposed to accelerated corrosion. In closing, Alireza Joshaghani studies self-compacting concrete mixtures by using blended binders comprised of sugarcane bagasse ash and rice husk ash.
