Turkish Muslim Women in Berlin
Kulkul presents her ethnographic work with Turkish Muslim women in Berlin as evidence that community is not an entity but is produced by instrumentalizing specific forms of identification and boundary-making. In examining the role of community in the case of her participants, Kulkul finds that religion and culture are important not for the values they perpetuate, but for their role in forming and sustaining the community. She looks at the importance of boundaries and especially their reciprocity. Social boundaries are a set of codes of exclusion often used against migrants and refugees, while symbolic boundaries are typically understood as the way one defines one’s own group. Kulkul argues that these two types of boundaries tend to trigger each other and thus be mutually reinforcing. At the same time, she presents a picture of everyday life from the perspective of migrants and the children of migrants in a cosmopolitan European city – Berlin. A valuable read for scholars of migration and culture, which will especially interest scholars focused on Europe.

Articles collected in Historicizing Sunni Islam in the Ottoman Empire, c. 1450-c. 1750 engage with the idea that “Sunnism” itself has a history and trace how particular Islamic genres—ranging from prayer manuals, heresiographies, creeds, hadith and fatwa collections, legal and theological treatises, and historiography to mosques and Sufi convents—developed and were reinterpreted in the Ottoman Empire between c. 1450 and c. 1750. Moving Forward: Malays for the 21st Century
A new edition of Moving Forward, which was first published a decade ago, in which Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad had presented a discourse on Malays in Malaysia and argued that the Malays had to move forward to survive and succeed in facing the new challenges of the 21st century. At the time, Nik Nazmi was (and still is) pushing for a more progressive paradigm where Malaysians are at ease with its diversity. The message of Moving Forward, then and now, remains: the Malays need to embrace democracy, progressive politics and diversity. This is the right thing to do as well as the only way to ensure the survival of the race, religion and country. In light of the recent political developments in Malaysia, Moving Forward is just as relevant today as it was in 2009. The text is largely the same as it was when first published. This new edition includes a new Introduction and a new Postscript to reflect on the book in light of the progress that Malaysians have achieved and the new challenges that they face today.
