Porous City
Some time ago, Walter Benjamin and Asja Lacis used the term "porosity" with reference to Naples’ urban characteristics – spaces merging into each other and providing the backdrop for the unforeseen – improvisation as a way of life. Today, the term "porosity" in this context is increasingly used conceptually. Well-known authors from the worlds of architecture, town planning, and landscape design embark on a search for new concepts for a life-enhancing, user-friendly city – with reference to this enigmatic term. The term refers to the overlaying and interweaving of spaces and structures, to urban textures and their architectural properties and qualities – to cities with radically mixed urban functions.

Die Praxis des Menschen – seine Kultur – ist nicht so sehr "Gestaltung der Welt" als vielmehr "Gestaltung zur Welt" (Cassirer). Kultur ist ein Netz aus Möglichkeiten und Bedeutungen, durch die Kultur findet das Verhältnis des Menschen zur Welt seinen Ausdruck. Der Kulturphilosophie kommt die Aufgabe zu, dieses Verhältnis näher zu bestimmen. Sie ist so eine Hermeneutik der Gesamtwirklichkeit. Die Beiträge zum Schwerpunktheft Kulturphilosophie gehen eine solche Verhältnisbestimmung an. Sie fragen exemplarisch nach dem Stellenwert von Pluralität und Essenz, von Geist, Natur und Geschichte und erinnern an die Aufgabe der Kulturphilosophie, ihre Zeit in Gedanken zu fassen.
Humanität und gebaute Umwelt
Welchen Bedingungen unterliegen menschliche Lebenswirklichkeiten in gesellschaftlich hervorgebrachten Räumen? Die Galerie Thannhauser gehörte mit ihren Häusern in München (1909-1928), Luzern (1919-1928) und Berlin (1927-1937) neben den Kunsthandlungen Cassirer, Alfred Flechtheim, Paul Rosenberg, Ambroise Vollard oder auch der Galerie Wildenstein zu den bedeutendsten Förderern der Moderne im Europa der Vor- und Zwischenkriegszeit. Der Band arbeitet die bewegte Geschichte des Familienunternehmens Thannhauser erstmals systematisch auf. Durch umfassende Archivrecherchen rekonstruiert Valerie Ender Leerstellen in deren Geschichte, sodass Gründung, Aufstieg und Etablierung der Avantgardegalerie in einem Netzwerk internationaler Kunstvermittler:innen und privater wie öffentlicher Sammlungen fassbar werden. Auch beleuchtet sie die Verluste des Kunsthandelsunternehmens in Berlin und Paris sowie die Verfolgung und Emigration von Justin Thannhauser und seiner Familie nach der Machtergreifung der Nationalsozialisten. Der lange Schatten der nationalsozialistischen Vernichtungspolitik im Nachkriegsdeutschland wird durch eine Dokumentation der komplizierten juristischen Verhandlungen und der perfiden Täter-Opfer-Umkehr im Kampf Thannhausers um Restitution auf eindrückliche Weise deutlich.
New Apelleses and New Apollos
This book breaks new ground by illuminating the key role of verse-writing as a cultural strategy on the part of Italian Renaissance artists. It does so by undertaking a wide-ranging study of poems by painters, sculptors, architects, and goldsmiths who were active in Florence under Cosimo I and Francesco I de’ Medici – a milieu in which many practitioners of the visual arts appropriated the literary medium to address issues related to their primary professions. New Apelleses, and New Apollos intervenes in the burgeoning scholarly discourse on the intellectual life of artists in early modern Italy, revealing how poetry often provides fresh insights into art-theoretical debates, patronage questions, workshop cultures, issues of professional identity, and networks of personal relations.
The City as Architecture
Architecture creates complex spatial situations that are the subject of urban design. Design uses a repertoire of specific architectural means in a creative way, resulting in cities that can be lived in and perceived in their three-dimensional experience. The current book, an extended new edition of Architecture of the City (2016), describes the repertoire with which architecture and design regain an entry to urbanistics. It pleads for an "architectonic turn" in urbanistics – a demand to finally comprehend the city architecturally: the issue is not just about buildings in the city, but about architecture of the city as a whole, as is clearly expressed in the new title of City as Architecture.
