Background and Aims: The added cost of dementia in the elderly population was shown to be particularly linked to behavioural symptoms. Numerous behavioural symptoms occur over the course of the disease and they affect both patients and caregivers. The present study assesses their influence on resource use. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of a cohort of 349 dementia patients living in southwestern France was conducted from January to July 2001. The mean Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) score at baseline was 16.1 (SD=7.5), with scores ranging from 0 to 30 (respectively the theoretical minimum and maximum) thereby covering all severities of the disease. Behavioural symptoms screened inc...

The concept of environmental justice has offered a new direction for social movements and public policy in recent decades, and researchers worldwide now position social equity as a prerequisite for sustainability. Yet the relationship between social equity and environmental sustainability has been little studied in Canada. Speaking for Ourselves draws together Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal scholars and activists who bring equity issues to the forefront by considering environmental justice from multiple perspectives and in specifically Canadian contexts.

Pathfinder

John C. Frémont’s expeditions between 1838 and 1854 captured the public’s imagination, inspired Americans to accept their nation’s destiny as a vast continental empire, and earned him his enduring sobriquet, “The Pathfinder.” This biography demonstrates Frémont’s vital importance to the history of American empire, and his role in shattering long-held myths about the ecology and habitability of the American West.

Fractal Geometry and Applications: A Jubilee of Benoit Mandelbrot

This volume offers an excellent selection of cutting-edge articles about fractal geometry, covering the great breadth of mathematics and related areas touched by this subject. Included are rich survey articles and fine expository papers. The high-quality contributions to the volume by well-known researchers--including two articles by Mandelbrot--provide a solid cross-section of recent research representing the richness and variety of contemporary advances in and around fractal geometry. In demonstrating the vitality and diversity of the field, this book will motivate further investigation into the many open problems and inspire future research directions. It is suitable for graduate students and researchers interested in fractal geometry and its applications. This is a two-part volume. Part 1 covers analysis, number theory, and dynamical systems; Part 2, multifractals, probability and statistical mechanics, and applications.

Man and River Systems

The volume focuses on the ecological functioning of rivers, which has received less attention than functioning of lakes and reservoirs. The selected papers cover a large range of topics relating to aquatic communities, eutrophication, nutrient dynamics and organic pollution, erosion and sediment transport, and fate of micropollutants at the basin scale. Integrated approaches developed in order to study the ecological functioning of fluvial systems perturbed by human activity are presented. This functioning is analysed from the point of view of fundamental research, but insights into system management are not neglected. This book will be of interest to researchers in the field of aquatic ecology, river system functioning, and water surface pollution, to postgraduate students, to the institutions involved in water resource management, and to the drinking water and waste water treatment industries. It draws information from many large river systems in the world.

Ballets roses
