This trilingual volume focuses on acts of transgressive acting/writing in selected texts of European literatures whose authors differ in gender, nationality and time frame. Thus, the contributions collected here consider a double questioning: of difference and transgression of norms. Both concepts are set in relation to each other in order to be able to embed any transition in cultural-social-historical contexts. The analyses and interpretations of selected texts from German, French, Polish, Russian and ancient literature, presented in chronological order, show exemplary acts of transgression in different cultures and under changing time circumstances and document aesthetic attempts to revise the existing order and create a new one.

The papers collected in this volume are selected from the proceedings of the Love and Sexuality conference held at the University of Leeds in 2002. They bring together a cross-section of new directions in the study of love and sexuality currently being explored in French Studies. The central focus of the collection is the representation of love, desire, erotica and sexuality in the couple, in particular in relation to depictions of women. The contributions share a common concern with problematising issues of love and sexuality across various disciplines, focusing on literary texts, cinema, gender studies, theatre studies, history, visual iconography and cultural studies, and ranging from the sixteenth century to the present day.

Dr. Keith Bernard has earned a reputation as a professor with strong convictions and warm rapport with students, rarely has reason to recall that he was once considered a human resources "hit man." But to those who observed him from a safe distance in his previous career in personnel management, it often appeared that he was someone who was capable of firing people without any visible displays of emotion. One afternoon, Bernard is summoned to the law offices of Harper and Fowler to be deposed in a questionable dismissal wrongful case of one of the district's former employees. Bernard testifies and, somewhat reluctantly, teaches about the very real ethical dimensions of personnel management. Through a story-telling style that often confounds the lawyers asking scripted questions, Bernard reveals for us the unvarnished truth and subtle complexities inherent in educational leadership by responding to the question that is at once both ethical and dramatic, that is: How shall I act?
