Body Love

Bernarr Macfadden (1868-1955) entertained and instructed Americans for decades. He championed physical exercise, fasting, and diet reform and was the relentless scourge of established doctors. He presented his views in Physical Culture, a popular magazine featuring photographs of strong men and healthy women and articles promoting the healthy life. While some critics derided him as a health nut, no one could dispute his genius as a magazine publisher. He established the world's greatest magazine publishing empire through the innovation of such popular publications as True Story, the first confession magazine; True Detective; and many others.

NOTE: the cover photo which is messed up here, is reproduced perfectly on the book. By far the best and most useful of Macfadden's numerous publications, this book, originally published in 1915, covers exercises in detail for developing vitality (physical well-being and energy). It also presents some excellent information about a healthful diet, correct breathing, fresh air, preserving the teeth, curing constipation, blood purification, bathing, clothing, sleep, etc. It covers a wide range of health subjects. The author, Bernarr Macfadden (1868-1955), was America's first "health guru" and definitely ahead of his time. This book presents many of his theories in a clear and readable format. The style of writing is dated, but his message is clear - his enthusiasm is obvious in just about every word. The photographs are numerous and excellent.

It is to Mark Adams’s great credit that, in Mr. America, he has rescued from obscurity a man whose influence is still felt in this country more than a century after he muscled his way onto the national scene.” —Wall Street Journal “Hilarious. . . . Delightful. . . . If Macfadden hadn’t existed, we would have had to invent him.” —Washington Post Mr. America is the fascinating true story of Bernarr Macfadden, a self-made millionaire and founding father of bodybuilding, alternative medicine, and tabloid culture.
