Sound art is one of the most fascinating phenomena in modern art. In recent years, more and more people have developed an interest in it: they apparently sense that this form of art touches on a fundamental experience. After all, at the very beginning, all of us got to know the world we live in as an acoustic space, before the sense of sight, which develops later, put us at a distance from the world. This book provides insight into the work of important protagonists of sound art and some of its outstanding representatives from the younger generation: Andres Bosshard (Switzerland; 1955) Paul DeMarinis (U.S.; 1948), Rolf Julius (Germany; 1939), Christina Kubisch (Germany; 1948), Bernhard Leitner (Austria; 1938), Andreas OldArp (Germany; 1959), Ed Osborn (U.S.; 1964), Martin Riches (U.K.; 1942), Steve Roden (U.S.; 1964), Erwin Stache (Germany; 1960) and Miki Yui (Japan; 1971).

The rise of a prominent auditory culture, reveals the degree to which sound art is lending definition to the 21st Century. And yet sound art still lacks related literature to compliment, and expand, the realm of practice. Background Noise sets out an historical overview, while at the same time shaping that history according to what sound art reveals - the dynamics of art to operate spatially, through media of reproduction and broadcast, and in relation to the intensities of communication and its contextual framework

Technical Safety – An Attribute of Quality

This book focuses on technical safety, means of expanding the current procedures, and making the related risks more predictable. It identifies the ‘hidden commonalities’ of the various technical safety concepts and formulates a corresponding procedure, applicable across disciplines, in a single guideline. The future is now: we constantly face change through science, research and technologies, change through industrial development, and new innovations and complexities. Our society fundamentally depends on technical systems, infrastructures and interconnected smart components, in every corner of the human environment. And these systems bring with them the need for technical safety. The risks of extending what is technically feasible have to be identified and analyzed at an early stage so as to avoid and/or mitigate potential harm by means of appropriate countermeasures. Every technical field interprets technical safety in its own way. However, if a safety concept is to be comprehensively applied, it must be compatible with all technical fields – a challenge this book successfully addresses.

Silence and its Derivatives

This edited book examines silence and silencing in and out of discourse, as viewed through a variety of contexts such as historical archives, day-to-day conversations, modern poetry, creative writing clubs, and visual novels, among others. The contributions engage with the historical shifts in how silence and silencing have been viewed, conceptualized and recorded throughout the course of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, then present a series of case studies from disciplines including linguistics, history, literature and culture, and geographical settings ranging from Argentina to the Philippines, Nigeria, Ireland, Morocco, Japan, South Africa, and Vietnam. Through these examples, the authors underline the thematic and methodological contact zones between different fields and traditions, providing a stimulating and truly interdisciplinary volume that will be of interest to scholars across the humanities.
