This thesis presents studies on the interaction of soft materials like surfactants and proteins with hard silica nanomaterials. Due to its interdisciplinary nature it combines concepts from the fields of physical chemistry, nanoscience and materials science, yielding to fundamental insights into the structure-directing forces operating at the nano-scale. It is shown that the morphology of surfactant micellar aggregates adsorbed at the surface of nanoparticles and inside tubular nanopores can be tuned on demand by the co-adsorption of a surface modifier. The interaction of globular proteins with silica nanoparticles is dominated by electrostatic interactions and can be controlled by pH and ionic strength, while the bridging of nanoparticles by adsorbed protein molecules leads to large-scale hybrid aggregates of protein with the nanoparticles. Concepts emerging from the role of electrostatic interactions in the hetero-aggregation of nanoparticles with protein molecules are used for the co-assembly of charged microbeads into linear clusters and chains of controllable length.

This dissertation contributes to the understanding of fundamental issues in the highly interdisciplinary field of colloidal science. Beyond colloid science, the system also serves as a model for studying interactions in biological matter. This work quantitatively investigated the scaling laws of the characteristic lengths of the structuring of colloidal dispersions and tested the generality of these laws, thereby explaining and resolving some long-standing contradictions in literature. It revealed the effect of confinement on the structuring, independently of specific properties of the confining interfaces. In addition, it resolved the influence of roughness and charge of the confining interfaces on the structuring and as well providing a method to measure the effect of surface deformability on colloidal structuring.

In the past few years, growing attention has been devoted to the study of the interactions taking place in mixed systems of phospholipid membranes and inorganic nanoparticles. This is an important issue with regard to using nanoparticles in nanomedicine but also in the related field of nanotoxicology. However, the nature of the interactions in such mixtures is rather complex and may lead to the formation of different colloidal structures. Focusing on the case of liposomes and silica nanoparticles, the study presented here aims at improving our understanding of the interactions in such mixed systems and at obtaining a detailed picture of the hybrid structures they result in. Drawing a parallel between different systems, this work offers not only interesting features on the internalization process of nanoparticles and on the stability of nanoparticle–decorated vesicles but also comprehensive insights into the influence of the bilayer state (liquid, gel) on the nanoscale structures of hybrid liposome/nanoparticle complexes.
