Hearing the Scriptures

Throughout the ages, interpreters of the Christian scriptures have been wonderfully creative in seeking to understand and bring out the wonders of these ancient writings. That creativity has often been overlooked by recent scholarship, concentrated as it is in the so-called critical period. In this study, Eugen J. Pentiuc illuminates the remarkable way in which the Byzantine hymnographers (liturgists) expressed their understanding of the Old Testament in their compositions, an interpretive process that he terms "liturgical exegesis."In authorship and methodology, patristic exegesis and liturgical exegesis are closely related. Patristic exegesis, however, is primarily linear and sequential, p...

In Good Faith

Prominent atheists claim the Bible is a racist text. Yet Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. read it daily. Then again, so did many ardent segregationists. Some atheists claim religion serves to oppress the masses. Yet the classic text of the French Revolution, What is the Third Estate?, was written by a priest. On the other hand, the revolutionaries ended up banning religion. What do we make of religion’s confusing role in history? And what of religion’s relationship to science? Some scientists claim that we have no free will. Others argue that advances in neurobiology and physics disprove determinism. As for whispering to the universe, an absurd habit say the skeptics. Yet prayer is a transform...

John 17

This will introduce the “John 17” experience and journey. A journey that began with a Pentecostal leader, Joe Tosini, and has since included Church leaders across the United States in a spirit of deep communion. This experience has included two personal and profound meetings with Pope Francis, each over two hours long, and more that forty Church leaders from the Evangelical, Pentecostal, and Catholic worlds. Those “encounters” have then been repeated locally in Arizona, Oregon, Texas, and New York. It is a movement led by the spirit that is not so much about ecumenical dialogue as a communion of friendship and love, as asked for by Jesus in John 17. Contributors: Joseph Tosini, Mike Herron, Don Curry, Gary Kinnaman, Bishop Eduardo Nevares, Bishop Thomas J. Olmsted, Sharon and Peter Poppleton, Joshua Butler, Linda Morris, Cal and Lisa Jernigan, Bishop Peter Smith, Peter Petrov, Brian and Gina Kruckenberg, Pat Markey, Michael Rudzena, Ryan Nunez, Ken Costa, Mark Buckley, Matt Maher, Bishop James Massa.

50 Years on

Pope John XXIII prayed that the Second Vatican Council would prove to be a new Pentecost. The articles gathered here appeared originally in a series solicited by and published in Theological Studies (September 2012 to March 2014). The purpose of the series was and remains threefold: - To commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council - To help readers more fully appreciate its significance not only for the Catholic Church itself but also for the entire world whom the Church encounters in proclamation and reception of ongoing revelation - In their present form, to help readers worldwide engage both the conciliar documents themselves and scholarly reflections on them, all with a view to appropriating the reform envisioned by Pope John XXIII. Contributors: Stephen B. Bevans, SVD; Mary C. Boys, SNJM; Maryanne Confoy, RSC; Massimo Faggioli; Anne Hunt; Natalia Imperatori-Lee; Edward Kessler; Gerald O'Collins, SJ; John W. The polarization in the Church today can be traced back to a more fundamental crisis in theology, one which has failed to connect our mundane experiences and the mysteries of the Christian faith with the person of Jesus Christ. Ecclesial discourse on the so-called ‘hot- button issues’ of the day too often take place without considering the foundation and goal of the Church. And this is unfortunately due to a similar tendency in the academic theology that informs that ecclesial discourse. In short, much of post-conciliar Catholic theology is adrift, floating aimlessly away from the center of the Christian faith, who is Christ. The Center is Jesus Christ Himself is a collection of essays w...
