Here's a book that I'd strongly recommend to Senator Dan Quayle, the man who supported the war in Vietnam, but decided that the fighting would go on without his direct participation. The book in question is Peaceful Patriot by Bonni McKeown. It's the story of a man who did not believe in the war in Vietnam, who declared himself a conscientious objector, who allowed himself to get drafted, who became a combat medic, & who was killed while trying to reach a wounded soldier in a firefight on February 11, 1969 - just about the time Senator Quayle took his draft physical & then made arrangements to get into the National Guard. Tom Bennett of Morgantown, WV, received the Medal of Honor for his actions in combat. He was the second CO ever to win the nation's highest military award. He did it while serving without a weapon with B Company, First Battalion, 14th Infantry of the Fourth Infantry Division near Pleiku. Just this summer, the Army named a new youth recreation center at Schofield Barracks after Bennett, one of the true American heroes of the Vietnam War.

Originally published in 2002, The Subsidy Scandal examines the subsidies spent by governments and the affect this has had on the environment. The book examines industries ranging from agriculture to mining, energy to transport and the subsidies spent on these industries by government. The book argues that these industries have had a negative impact on the environment, often funded through government subsidies derived from public taxes. The book suggests that these subsidies go to those who least need them – frequently to corporations and special interest groups which recycle some of the funds to support the politicians who keep the subsidies going. Based on research in North America, with examples from Europe and elsewhere, the book provides an investigative report into to the money assigned to environmental policies to find out where the money goes and what produces it.

The story of Philadelphia's only Medal of Honor recipient from the Vietnam War told here for the first time Michael Crescenz grew up in one of Philadelphia’s booming post-war Catholic neighborhoods, distinguishing himself early on as a leader, brother and friend who fearlessly rose to the defense of others in need. The second of six sons born to a World War II veteran, Michael was known for his big smile, athletic abilities, toughness and fierce competitive spirit. Growing up, Michael’s world revolved around his family, parish, local playgrounds, and the bustling Catholic schools he attended from first grade through high school graduation. All these influences shaped the man he would bec...

War Stories

War stories are mostly innocent fables and understood as such by both the teller and the hearer. However, they have long been used for political and national purposes, and those about the war in Vietnam were no exception, as painfully evidenced in the 2004 presidential campaign. John Kerry campaigned as a war hero. His opponents cast him as a liar and a traitor and their war story prevailed. ""War Stories"" delves into the myths associated with the Vietnam veteran s experience and looks at them through the war stories they told and continue to tell. Kulik conducts an extremely thorough review of the Vietnam literature and interviews participants wherever possible, poking holes in the war myt...
