In Partitioned Borgu, Abdu, provides an authoritative account of a relatively little known local and yet vital dimension to the classic imperial diplomacy that occasionally came close to outbreaks of war between the fiercely competing European powers, particularly France and Britain, as they sought for spheres of influence and African territories in the infamous era of the so-called Scramble and Partition of Africa. ___________________________ Hussaini Abdu, is a Political Scientist and International Development expert. Borgu and Its Kingdoms

This text documents the history of Borgu (a little-known area now situated in the northern part of the Republic of Benin and the north-western region of Nigeria) from the period when Mande peoples migrated from their homeland to settle in many parts of the Western Sudan including Borgu. By the ninth century, they had established long-distance trade; the art of making brass and copper artifacts by the lost-wax technique was known; and large political entities were being formed. By the 15th century, Borgu consisted of three kingdoms whose rulers claimed close kinship ties, and the king's position was firmly rooted in ancient religious traditions. The historical reconstruction of Borgu society rests on a detailed examination of oral tradition, linguistic and genealogical data, archival records and ethnographic fieldwork.

Transfrontier Regionalism. The Revival of Regional Integration in Africa

The views and perspectives adopted by A.I. Asiwaju and D. Bach appear sufficiently distinct, yet they converge on several key issues: i.e., the informal achievement of regionalization in Africa through kinship and other non-state networks; the resistance of Africans to boundaries inherited from the colonial period; and the consequences of the arbitrariness of these boundaries. Anyone who has ever crossed the Seme border between the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Republic of Benin cannot but subscribe to the perceptions shared by the two authors. Whatever the purpose of the trip, travellers crossing the border share the experience of being in a lawless area: the occasional traveller who ...

First published in 1965. The present volume is the first study of British activities in Nigeria that has been written by a non-native and therefore author cannot claim to have discovered many facts that were unknown, he does write from a detached point of view. This study supplies in a small measure the need for more case studies of the imperialistic process.

The Yorùbá are one of the peoples of West Africa affected by the demarcation of territories by European powers at the close of the nineteenth century. Although the bulk of the people are now found in South-western Nigeria, impressive indigenous Yorùbá communities are in the neighbouring Republics of Benin and Togo. This book is primarily concerned with the Yorùbá sub-groups in the latter two countries. The intention is to trace, with the aid of verbally transmitted historical source materials, supplemented with available written data, the pre-colonial socio-political developments of the subgroups.
