Widely regarded as the most important narrative of seventeenth-century New England, William Bradford's Of Plimmoth Plantation is one of the founding documents of American literature and history. In William Bradford's Books this portrait of the religious dissenters who emigrated from the Netherlands to New England in 1620 receives perhaps its sharpest textual analysis to date—and the first since that of Samuel Eliot Morison two generations ago. Far from the gloomy elegy that many readers find, Bradford's history, argues Douglas Anderson, demonstrates remarkable ambition and subtle grace, as it contemplates the adaptive success of a small community of religious exiles. Anderson offers fresh literary and historical accounts of Bradford's accomplishment, exploring the context and the form in which the author intended his book to be read.

Ireland and the Reception of the Bible

Drawing on the work of leading figures in biblical, religious, historical, and cultural studies in Ireland and beyond, this volume explores the reception of the Bible in Ireland, focusing on the social and cultural dimensions of such use of the Bible. This includes the transmission of the Bible, the Bible and identity formation, engagement beyond Ireland, and cultural and artistic appropriation of the Bible. The chapters collected here are particularly useful and insightful for those researching the use and reception of the Bible, as well as those with broader interests in social and cultural dimensions of Irish history and Irish studies. The chapters challenge the perception in the minds of...

Pursued

The challenge for me in writing this book was to blend factual incidents with fictional characters and events in a way that would be entertaining as well as educational for the readers-- regardless of their background and experience. Although the active characters and events described in this novel are fictional, they are based upon real incidents and real people. The depiction of their ancestors is factual and taken from history, news articles and internet interviews. After the book was written-- in a surprisingly short time-- I found some errors in the information I had received. It took weeks of travel and many interviews in British Columbia, the Yukon Territory, Alberta and Alaska to sor...

Nothing General About It

The General Hospital star recounts his emotional journey in this instant bestseller, a story of success, show business, family, and mental health. New York Times–bestselling author and Emmy Award–winning actor Maurice Benard is best known for his twenty-five years of playing Michael “Sonny” Corinthos, Jr., on ABC’s hit daytime television show General Hospital. The rakish mobster is beloved and feared, perhaps in equal measure, but what many viewers don’t know is that for decades, Benard lived in true fear of a much greater threat: himself. In Nothing General About It, Benard relays the challenges of growing up in a small town with undiagnosed bipolar disorder, and his struggle to...
