Delaware State University

Since its founding in 1891, Delaware State University has proven to be an influential leader in the campaign for equal and quality higher education for students coming from disadvantaged backgrounds in the state of Delaware. Originally the State College for Colored Students, the school was established in response to the Second Morrill Land Grant Act, which required states to allow African Americans entrance into state colleges or to create separate schools for such students. Born in the age of segregation, this proud institution has weathered the storms of over a century and, with vision and persistence, transformed itself into a highly regarded, four-year university. Containing over two hun...

Standing Under the Wrong Rainbow entwines insights from the Bible with the opinions of the author, G. Deon Thompson, to make the case for the durability of the traditional view of marriage as the lifelong union of one woman and one man, while exposing the shortcomings of modern arguments that speak in favor of gay marriage. Chapters treat a variety of topics, including the history of the notion of "rights," the scriptural grounding for the traditional morality of marriage, philosophies of truth, the challenges of modern life, the sacrificial nature of godly love, and the essence of marriage as God intends it for human life. If you have found yourself struggling with contemporary debates over the nature of marriage, if you wonder whether the church's traditional teachings still apply in the twenty-first century, and if you feel a growing divide between the practice of your faith and the life of the wider community, then Standing Under the Wrong Rainbow serves as a wake-up call and a guide to reclaiming the power of longstanding tradition.

With All Deliberate Speed

This is the first effort to provide a broad assessment of how well the Brown v. Board of Education decision that declared an end to segregated schools in the United States was implemented. Written by a distinguished group of historians, the twelve essays in this collection examine how African Americans and their supporters in twelve states—Arkansas, North Carolina, Virginia, South Carolina, Georgia, Mississippi, Florida, Delaware, Missouri, Indiana, Nevada, and Wisconsin—dealt with the Court’s mandate to desegregate “with all deliberate speed.” The process followed many diverse paths. Some of the common themes in these efforts were the importance of black activism, especially the crucial role played by the NAACP; entrenched white opposition to school integration, which wasn’t just a southern state issue, as is shown in Delaware, Wisconsin, and Indiana; and the role of the federal government, a sometimes inconstant and sometimes reluctant source of support for implementing Brown.

Lost Delaware

Former Delaware journalists Rachel Kipp and Dan Shortridge document the past, present, and sometimes the future of Delaware's landmarks and legends. Originally part of Pennsylvania and called "the three lower counties on the Delaware," the First State's present has been shaped by both colonial culture and modern industry. Many landmarks of its past, including the Greenbaum Cannery, the Rosedale Beach Hotel, the Nanticoke Queen restaurant, the Ross Point School and the Kahunaville nightclub now live solely in memory. The tales of airplanes and auto plants, breweries and bridges, cows and churches provide insight into the state's many communities, including its Black heritage. Read about fallen hospitals, long-ago lighthouses, crumbling mansions, demolished prisons and theaters that no longer hold shows.

Revealing the forgotten in community histories Histories try to forget, as this evocative study of one community reveals. Forgetting and the Forgotten details the nature of how a community forged its story against outsiders. Historian Michael C. Batinski explores the habits of forgetting that enable communities to create an identity based on silencing competing narratives. The white settlers of Jackson County, Illinois, shouldered the hopes of a community and believed in the justice of their labor as it echoed the national story. The county’s pastkeepers, or keepers of the past, emphasizing the white settlers’ republican virtue, chose not to record violence against Kaskaskia people and A...

Millions of people all over the world have been displaced from their homes and property. Dispossessed individuals and communities often lose more than the physical structures they live in and their material belongings, they are also denied their dignity. These are dignity takings, and land dispossessions occurring in South Africa during colonialism and apartheid are quintessential examples. There have been numerous examples of dignity takings throughout the world, but South Africa stands apart because of its unique remedial efforts. The nation has attempted to move beyond the more common step of providing reparations (compensation for physical losses) to instead facilitating dignity restorat...

Between North and South

Between North and South chronicles the three-decade-long struggle over segregated schooling in Delaware, a key border state and important site of civil rights activism and white reaction. Historian Brett Gadsden begins by tracing the origins of a long litigation campaign by NAACP attorneys who translated popular complaints about the inequities in Jim Crow schooling into challenges to racial proscriptions in public education. Their legal victories subsequently provided the evidentiary basis for the Supreme Court's historic decision in Brown v. Board of Education, marking Delaware as a center of civil rights advancements. Gadsden's further examination of a novel metropolitan approach to addres...

Citizens, nonprofit organizations and local public officials--in increasing numbers--are using the arts and culture as vehicles to improve their downtowns, as well as to enhance general economic conditions within their communities. Public officials especially are learning that they can plant the seeds of urban renewal and, at the same time, promote their city's culture and arts. This not only renews their neighborhoods and downtowns, but also attracts tourists and private investment. A new eclectic economic development model has evolved and is beginning to work in a number of politically, economically, racially and culturally diverse communities throughout America. From Atlanta and Reno to P...
